2010 Range Rover Sport L320 Supercharged, Australian show vehicle

Range Rover Sport L320 5.0 V8 petrol diagnostic scanner guide

For the later Range Rover Sport L320 5.0 petrol V8, check the 5.0 engine entry rather than relying on earlier 4.2 Supercharged support. iCarsoft LR V3.0 offers separate normally aspirated and supercharged 5.0 choices in its reviewed early-late-model group. A restricted-performance message still needs the actual controller report before any conclusion about a failed component.

Which vehicles this guide covers

This guide concerns the first-generation L320 Sport with the later 5.0 petrol V8. UK focus is the supercharged model; naturally aspirated overseas versions and imports must be identified separately. The reviewed iCarsoft evidence is 2010–2011. Later 2012–2013 builds require their own compatibility check. It excludes the earlier 4.2 Supercharged and 4.4 petrol engines, all diesels, the full-size L322 and later L494 Sport.

JLR’s September 2009 announcement for the 2010 Range Rover Sport describes the new supercharged 5.0 petrol engine. The iCarsoft catalogue separately lists both 5.0 petrol variants for the reviewed group; that international catalogue is not proof of UK availability of every variant. Read JLR’s 2010 Sport announcement.

Generic OBD versus manufacturer-aware diagnostics

A generic OBD/EOBD reader can be useful for supported emissions-related powertrain codes and data. That is different from access to the vehicle’s other controllers. A successful engine connection does not establish ABS, suspension, AWD, transmission or body-system access. Choose the tool around the question you need answered, rather than the number of functions advertised on its packaging.

Manufacturer-aware diagnostics can add access to specifically supported controllers and their data. Check the exact engine, build, fitted equipment and required reading function. A scanner may communicate with one system while another is unsupported or unavailable. Keep “no stored faults” separate from “no communication” in the report; neither is a certificate of mechanical condition.

The owner question behind the scanner choice

In an owner discussion, a 2010 Sport Supercharged owner reported a Restricted Performance message and described a temporary change after attending to airflow-sensor connections. Another participant described a warning after cooling-system work. These reports illustrate the need to preserve engine codes, warning wording and recent repair history. They do not establish a common cause or justify copying a disconnection procedure. Read the owner discussion.

What to record before interpreting a code

Restricted Performance is a driver message, not a component diagnosis. Record whether power changed, when the warning appeared and what work preceded it. Keep the actual full diagnostic codes and their controller names rather than searching only the dashboard wording. Petrol cars should not inherit diesel DPF-regeneration advice from a forum result with a similar message. This guide gives no component-disconnection tests or boost-control repair instructions.

iCarsoft LR V3.0: what the lookup establishes

The LR V3.0 lookup provides LANDROVER → Range Rover Sport → 2010–2011 → Normally aspirated V8 5.0L and Supercharged V8 5.0L. The reviewed ECM cards list reading/clearing faults, live data, module information and freeze-data reading. Confirm the exact engine choice and the particular live values needed. A later or earlier Sport entry is not a substitute for a matching build. Check the official iCarsoft function lookup.

These are manufacturer-listed reading categories, not results from Unusual Cars testing. The reviewed cards also contain other feature headings; those are not used here to promise active tests, resets, calibration or programming. For a particular live value, ask the supplier to name it and confirm it for the fitted controller and current vehicle software.

GAP IIDTool: check platform, year and hardware

GAP distinguishes L320 2005–2009 and 2010–2013 in its hardware coverage. Use the late-L320 selection for the actual vehicle and ask about petrol PCM, transmission and fitted chassis controllers individually. A broad platform listing does not prove every engine parameter or that active roll control or another optional system is installed. Treat the manufacturer’s table warning about missing or incorrect information seriously. See GAP’s functionality and hardware tables.

Which diagnostic route makes sense?

For an occasional supported engine-emissions question, a basic EOBD reader may be sufficient for an initial report. For handheld access to specifically confirmed manufacturer systems, shortlist LR V3.0. For repeated ownership work involving engine and fitted-chassis reporting, compare the appropriate IIDTool package. If one unresolved fault is the only reason for buying, a suitably equipped specialist’s report may be more useful than a tool whose exact access remains unconfirmed.

Before paying, send the supplier the actual vehicle details and a short list of tasks: the engine fault report, the particular live parameter, or the named fitted controller. Obtain confirmation for those tasks. Do not treat “Land Rover compatible” or a service-menu heading as a guarantee of every function. Check genuine product identity, seller, return terms and current software coverage.

Hardware, devices, licences and updates

GAP separates G3 and G4 hardware and model-year coverage. Early L322 coverage especially needs the correct hardware choice; newer hardware is not automatically the right package for every older model. Confirm any manufacturer-approved adapter and supported phone/tablet, app and firmware. This guide gives no diagnostic-socket modification instructions. The BT product includes one VIN licence for VIN-locked functions; additional licences and Pro terms differ.

For iCarsoft, confirm LR V3.0 rather than assuming similarly named products have the same catalogue. Check the supplied connection equipment, installed Land Rover software and supported update computer. Product and function coverage can change, so repeat the exact-build check before purchase. Coverage of fault reading does not establish safe applicability of a service routine.

Save a useful first report

Save the complete original scan before clearing anything. Keep vehicle identification privately, together with engine, gearbox, modifications, exact warning wording, cold/warm behaviour, recent repairs and tool/software version. Preserve controller names, full codes including suffixes, statuses and available freeze-frame context. Include modules that did not communicate. Clearing a fault can remove useful evidence and does not repair the underlying cause.

Limits of the scan

Reading codes, clearing memory, viewing data, resetting a reminder, commanding a component and programming a module are different capabilities. This guide contains no immobiliser, key-programming or security-access instructions and guarantees no coding, calibration, programming or active-test function. Braking, steering, suspension, significant engine symptoms or drive-control concerns need appropriate professional assessment. A scanner cannot certify mechanical engine or transmission health.

Frequently asked questions

Can the earlier 4.2 Supercharged entry be used as proof for the 5.0?

No. Confirm the 5.0 engine and late L320 catalogue group.

Does Restricted Performance identify a failed component?

No. Retrieve the full report from the correct petrol controller and assess it alongside the symptoms and repair history.
