The Mercedes X156 online manual labelled January 2017 gives 6.5 litres, including the oil filter, for its “all other models” service-fill group. The covered GLA220d sits outside the named petrol, AMG and GLA180d exceptions. Confirm that this manual applies to your car before using the figure for an oil change.
This is a documented reference for the selected X156 diesel coverage, not an instruction to pour 6.5 litres into an engine that already contains oil. Earlier GLA220 CDI versions and later H247 cars need their applicable information checked separately.
How to read the 6.5-litre reference
The capacity table is on printed page 356, PDF page 359. Its heading says the amounts include a new oil filter. The separate named rows matter: the petrol GLA220 appears with a different quantity, so dropping the “d” from a search can lead to the wrong answer.
| Question | What the reference establishes |
|---|---|
| Is 6.5 litres a service fill? | Yes, for the applicable “all other models” row, including the oil filter. |
| Is it a top-up amount? | No. A top-up depends on the existing level and the car’s checking instructions. |
| Can an OM651 figure from another Mercedes be substituted? | No. A shared engine family does not establish the same vehicle fill reference. |
| Does it cover every year and market? | No. Match the manual and any supplements to the car. |
The source is an English-language online manual with a German-market disclaimer. For a UK car, use the supplied manual or matched workshop information to confirm applicability. Retain the build and drivetrain details when resolving a conflicting quote; do not treat all internet figures as interchangeable.
Which MB oil approval is listed?
For diesel engines with a particulate filter, the inspected manual distinguishes GLA180d from the other diesel models. The latter group lists MB 228.51, 229.31, 229.51 and 229.52. Use the applicable approval together with the viscosity guidance for the car, rather than selecting any oil labelled “diesel” or “5W-30”.
As one product example, Mobil’s current UK page lists MB-Approval 229.51 and 229.52 for Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30. That verifies this exact product’s stated approvals; it does not approve every Mobil oil or every bottle returned by a retailer search.

Search Amazon for Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30Check the selected listing’s full product name, approval, bottle size and seller. Agree the confirmed quantity before buying oil to supply to a garage. Spare oil can be useful, but the volume bought is not automatically the amount to put in the engine.
Check the level separately from ASSYST PLUS
The manual describes a dipstick check and states that ASSYST PLUS does not show the engine oil level. A service countdown therefore cannot tell you how much oil is currently in the sump.
Use the complete checking instructions supplied with the vehicle, including the level surface, engine condition and waiting time. Keep clear of hot components and avoid spills. If a reading or warning is unclear, resolve it before adding oil; the manual warns that overfilling can cause damage.
For an oil change, Mercedes recommends a qualified specialist workshop. Keep the exact oil product, approval, quantity charged, filter reference, date and mileage on the invoice. Those details are more useful at the next service than a receipt saying only “engine oil”.
