Mercedes E220 d W213 Oil: 6.3L Capacity, 229.52 & 229.71

The inspected Mercedes W213 saloon manual lists 6.3 litres for an E220 d oil change including the filter. Its applicable diesel approval group includes MB 229.52 and MB 229.71. Match the manual to your car before using that figure or choosing an oil.

This guide focuses on the earlier E220 d OM654.920 application at 143 kW/194 hp. The reference is not a universal quantity for every later OM654, mild hybrid or E-Class body style.

What does the 6.3-litre figure cover?

Printed page 457 names E220 d in the 6.3-litre replacement group beneath the oil-change-including-filter heading. It is a complete-change reference, not the amount to add when the engine already contains oil.

SituationHow to use the figure
Oil and filter change6.3-litre reference for the covered model/manual.
Buying bottlesA five-litre pack alone is short; compare complete quantities and delivered price.
Oil top-upUse the actual level instruction, not the service-fill quantity.
Different engine version or manualVerify its own specification and quantity separately.

For purchasing, seven litres gives more than the documented change reference; six litres gives less. Compare suitable pack combinations, then have the final level established correctly. Spare oil stays in its container.

Is 0W-20 or 5W-30 the right choice?

The approval and viscosity are different checks. The inspected manual’s relevant diesel group lists 228.51, 229.31, 229.51, 229.52 and 229.71. A viscosity label alone does not show that an oil meets one of those approvals.

For a matching vehicle, the following are two specific products to compare against its requirements. This is not a claim that every 0W-20 or 5W-30 oil is suitable, or that a higher approval number automatically replaces another specification.

Mobil’s UK product data supports those approval statements. Its ESP x2 page also limits use to approved applications and says it is not backward compatible with older engines. Use the 229.71 route only where the car’s requirements permit it.

Search results can mix similar Mobil names, grades and pack sizes. Check the exact formulation and current approval on the container or product data, then compare the price for the same total volume. The “ESP” name by itself is not a complete product specification.

Why does the oil-level display keep measuring?

For the electronic checking system described on printed pages 393–394, the level is determined while driving. The display can require up to 30 minutes’ driving, depending on the driving profile. The car must be level for the measurement, and opening the bonnet can require the level to be determined again after restarting and driving.

The menu is Service → Engine oil level. A measuring message is not a request to add oil. Follow the actual displayed instruction and the applicable manual; a full service-fill quantity must never be treated as a top-up.

If the display reports an inoperative system, repeated measuring without a usable result should be investigated rather than answered with an assumed quantity. Check the exact wording and conditions with the workshop. Use your own vehicle’s procedure if its display or manual differs.
