The January 2017 Mercedes CLA manual lists 6.5 litres, including the oil filter, for a CLA220d or CLA220d 4MATIC oil change. For a confirmed OM651 passenger-car engine with a diesel particulate filter, Mercedes’ current applicability sheet lists MB 229.51 and MB 229.52. Match the vehicle and oil approval before choosing a viscosity or buying a container.
Coverage before you buy
This guide concerns the first-generation C117 CLA220d diesel Coupé. It does not establish requirements for petrol CLA models, AMG versions or the later C118. The engine/DPF application must match the specification row used here. Check the vehicle paperwork and relevant manual; sharing “CLA” or “220” in the name does not make an oil listing applicable.
The January 2017 official English manual includes country and equipment caveats. Its quantity table directly names the diesel models above. We use that table together with the current engine applicability sheet, rather than treating an old list of possible approvals as a universal buying recommendation.
Oil approval and oil viscosity answer different questions
| Label or number | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| MB-Approval 229.51 or 229.52 | A specific Mercedes oil standard; match its applicability to the engine. |
| 5W-30, 0W-30 or another SAE grade | Viscosity information; the grade alone does not prove Mercedes approval. |
| “Suitable for” or “recommended for” | A supplier claim requiring verification; it is not automatically an actual approval. |
| 6.5 litres including filter | The manual’s oil-change quantity for the listed models; not a topping-up amount. |
Mercedes sheet 223.2, version 20 April 2026, marks 229.51 and 229.52 on its passenger-car OM651-with-DPF row. Its notes retain the vehicle manual as the binding specification reference and require the viscosity to suit operating temperatures. The 229.52 entry carries the fuel-economy recommendation note. This does not make every 5W-30 oil acceptable or approve every newer Mercedes standard for this engine.
How to check a product listing
- Establish the applicable approval for the car.
- Read the exact product name and SAE grade on the manufacturer’s product information.
- Check the product against the Mercedes approval list for the required sheet.
- Match the retailer listing to that exact product and container, not merely a similar brand name.
- Retain a record of the approval and product supplied.
For example, Mercedes sheet 229.52 includes a product named Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 in the list checked for this guide. This is an approval-list example, not a recommendation of a particular seller, package size or price. Other products with similar names should be checked independently. The category link below is a browsing route, not an endorsement of every product in the results.
When a retailer title and product data sheet disagree, resolve that mismatch before ordering. A search result containing “Mercedes oil” should not outweigh the exact technical description.
How much should I buy?
The documented 6.5-litre change quantity means a single 5-litre container is less than the stated capacity. Container sizes are a purchasing calculation; they do not replace the applicable oil-change procedure or final level check.
Keep three quantities distinct: how much you buy, how much a workshop actually adds during a change, and how much an existing engine needs when topping up. Do not pour the full change quantity into an engine merely because its level appears low. Follow the manual’s level-check and filling instructions for the vehicle.
On an invoice, request the oil approval and quantity basis alongside the oil/filter operation. If an invoice uses a rounded package allowance, ask whether that is a billing allowance or the measured amount supplied.
What about the oil filter?
Oil approval does not establish filter fitment. The filter needs an application matched to the vehicle build. Avoid selecting a complete “OM651 service kit” solely because the engine-family name looks correct.
Browse oil filters on eBay using the link below. Add or select your vehicle, then check the listing’s compatibility details, complete part number and seller’s notes before ordering. Contact the seller if anything is unclear. The link opens an oil-filter category; it does not identify a filter already matched to your car.

For manufacturer-listed references and their application limits, see our CLA220d oil and air-filter guide.
Does this tell me the oil-change interval?
No fixed UK interval is established here. Specification, quantity and replacement timing are separate facts. Use the applicable maintenance documents and service data to establish timing; this product-selection guide does not lengthen the displayed due period.
A B5 message also cannot be used to deduce the oil quantity or a complete set of additional jobs. Read the B5 guide for that distinction and the overdue-message guide if the due point has passed.
What should remain on your service record?
Keep the date, mileage, actual product name, Mercedes approval and oil/filter operation on the paperwork. That record helps when reviewing a previous service or choosing the next supply. A brand name without the approval leaves an important question unanswered.
For broader context, see CLA ASSYST PLUS service codes. A diagnostic scanner is not required merely to choose an oil specification, and an ASSYST reminder is not an oil-level reading.
Use the CLA220d maintenance guide to organise the wider service record, and the UK service-cost guide when comparing a workshop oil service with a broader quotation.
