The inspected September 2015 Mercedes C-Class saloon manual lists 6.0 litres for the covered C220 d oil change, including the filter. Its DPF-diesel approval group includes MB 229.51 and MB 229.52. Confirm the manual’s application against your car before using the quantity or selecting oil.
This guide concentrates on the earlier OM651.921 C220 d/BlueTEC application. It does not apply that six-litre reference to a later OM654 C220 d, another C-Class diesel or every body/drivetrain combination.
Why not use the quantity from another OM651?
The engine family name alone does not establish a service-fill quantity. Printed page 429 names C220 d in the 6.0-litre group under the oil-change-including-filter heading. Other diesel groups on that same page differ.
| Question | What the documented entry means |
|---|---|
| With or without the oil filter? | Including the oil filter. |
| Is this a top-up amount? | No. Establish the existing level and required addition separately. |
| Does every W205 diesel take this amount? | No. Match the named model and applicable manual. |
| Does six litres bought mean six litres poured immediately? | No. Use the proper filling and final-level procedure. |
Do not copy a 6.5-litre figure from our earlier W204 or W212 guides just because those cars also have OM651 engines. Each page identifies a different documented application.
Approval and viscosity are separate checks
The manual’s covered C220 d DPF group lists 228.51, 229.31, 229.51 and 229.52. Choose a product carrying an approval required by your vehicle documents, together with the appropriate viscosity. A retailer describing a bottle as “Mercedes compatible” does not establish an MB approval.
The page also gives an AMG-only viscosity instruction and a limited emergency substitute-oil provision. Neither should be turned into a general full-service oil recommendation for this C220 d.
A specific oil to compare
Mobil’s UK information lists both MB-Approval 229.51 and 229.52 for Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30. When that product’s approval and grade match your car’s requirements, it is a specific buying option to compare.

Search Amazon for Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30The link opens a search, so it may show other Mobil oils, grades and pack sizes. Check the complete ESP 5W-30 product and current approval on its data sheet or container. A similar brand name does not make every result interchangeable.
How much should you buy?
A five-litre bottle alone is less than the documented six-litre service quantity. Compare a five-litre plus one-litre purchase with other pack combinations, allowing for any spare you want to retain. Compare the delivered price per litre for the same oil formulation.
The purchase volume is not the amount to add as a top-up. Surplus stays in the container, and the final engine level needs checking using the applicable vehicle procedure. Avoid overfilling to finish a bottle.
Record the service properly
Keep the date, mileage, oil product and approval on the service invoice. Oil selection, oil-filter selection and resetting the reminder are separate tasks. For the filter match, use our W205 C220 d oil and air-filter guide; for the wider job, return to the OM651 maintenance overview.
