For a Range Rover L322 4.4 petrol V8, identify which 4.4 engine and electronics the vehicle actually has before choosing a scanner. An early Bosch ME7.2 entry and a later normally aspirated V8 ECM entry are different catalogue routes. iCarsoft LR V3.0 and GAP IIDTool are conditional shortlists for reading the engine and the separately confirmed fitted controllers.
Which vehicles this guide covers
This guide covers the full-size third-generation L322 with the naturally aspirated 4.4 petrol V8. It separates the original BMW-derived engine from the Jaguar-derived replacement introduced for the 2006 model. It excludes 4.4 TDV8 diesel, 4.2 Supercharged and 5.0 petrol engines, and the L320 Sport. Registration year alone is insufficient around the changeover: identify build, engine and engine-management information. Imported, converted or replacement-engine vehicles need particular care.
Contemporary reporting by Autoweek identifies the original BMW 4.4 and the replacement Jaguar-derived normally aspirated 4.4 and supercharged 4.2 for the 2006 model. JLR’s historical timeline separately records the later 5.0 engines arriving in 2009. This explains why a generic “L322 V8” description cannot establish the right scanner selection. JLR’s retrospective model history provides the later-engine chronology. Read the contemporary model-change report.
Match the scanner to the question
| Owner question | Information to seek | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Buying a misfiring early 4.4 | Correct ME7.2 engine report and available data | The report cannot establish repair cost or mechanical condition. |
| Later 4.4 petrol engine | Matching normally aspirated V8 ECM selection | Early BMW-engine support does not establish later engine coverage. |
| Suspension or gearbox warning | Report from the relevant fitted controller | An engine-only reader can miss the system involved. |

Generic OBD versus manufacturer-aware diagnostics
A generic OBD/EOBD reader can be useful for supported emissions-related powertrain codes and data. That is different from access to the vehicle’s other controllers. A successful engine connection does not establish ABS, suspension, AWD, transmission or body-system access. Choose the tool around the question you need answered, rather than the number of functions advertised on its packaging.
Manufacturer-aware diagnostics can add access to specifically supported controllers and their data. Check the exact engine, build, fitted equipment and required reading function. A scanner may communicate with one system while another is unsupported or unavailable. Keep “no stored faults” separate from “no communication” in the report; neither is a certificate of mechanical condition.
The owner question behind the scanner choice
A prospective buyer described a 2002 4.4 with misfires on three cylinders and asked whether it might be an inexpensive repair. Replies urged getting diagnostic evidence before buying. This is an ownership and buying question, not proof of a recurring defect or a particular failed component. A saved engine report can guide further investigation, but it cannot price the repair or establish compression, timing or overall engine condition. Read the owner discussion.
What to record before interpreting a code
Treat a misfire code as a record of the monitored event. It does not by itself distinguish ignition, fuelling, intake or mechanical causes. Keep the affected cylinders, operating conditions and full code status together. For an LPG-converted vehicle, record the conversion and fuel in use when the symptom appeared; an engine scanner’s petrol coverage does not establish coverage of a separate aftermarket LPG controller.
iCarsoft LR V3.0: what the lookup establishes
For LR V3.0 → LANDROVER → Range Rover → 2002–2005 → Base, the diagnostic card ENG (BOSCH ME7.2 EMS) lists fault-code reading, fault-memory clearing and live data. The same shared Base group includes diesel and several transmission entries; their presence does not make them applicable to a petrol car. Separately, Range Rover → 2006 → Normally aspirated V8 has an ECM card listing fault reading/clearing, live data, module information and freeze-data reading. The 2006 selection is a documented example, not a guarantee for every later 4.4 build. Check the official iCarsoft function lookup.
These are manufacturer-listed reading categories, not results from Unusual Cars testing. The reviewed cards also contain other feature headings; those are not used here to promise active tests, resets, calibration or programming. For a particular live value, ask the supplier to name it and confirm it for the fitted controller and current vehicle software.
GAP IIDTool: check platform, year and hardware
GAP’s L322 → 2004 table explicitly lists ECM-Engine (ME7.2) for reading/clearing and separates ABS, air suspension and transmission reporting. Its ME7.2 live-value list includes engine speed, coolant temperature and bank-specific lambda information. These are examples from the reviewed early-year table, rather than a promise that the later Jaguar-derived engine has identical parameters. Reconfirm the exact later build and the specific parameter needed. See GAP’s functionality and hardware tables.
Which diagnostic route makes sense?
For an occasional supported engine-emissions question, a basic EOBD reader may be sufficient for an initial report. For handheld access to specifically confirmed manufacturer systems, shortlist LR V3.0. For repeated ownership work involving engine and fitted-chassis reporting, compare the appropriate IIDTool package. If one unresolved fault is the only reason for buying, a suitably equipped specialist’s report may be more useful than a tool whose exact access remains unconfirmed.
Before paying, send the supplier the actual vehicle details and a short list of tasks: the engine fault report, the particular live parameter, or the named fitted controller. Obtain confirmation for those tasks. Do not treat “Land Rover compatible” or a service-menu heading as a guarantee of every function. Check genuine product identity, seller, return terms and current software coverage.
Hardware, devices, licences and updates
GAP separates G3 and G4 hardware and model-year coverage. Early L322 coverage especially needs the correct hardware choice; newer hardware is not automatically the right package for every older model. Confirm any manufacturer-approved adapter and supported phone/tablet, app and firmware. This guide gives no diagnostic-socket modification instructions. The BT product includes one VIN licence for VIN-locked functions; additional licences and Pro terms differ.
For iCarsoft, confirm LR V3.0 rather than assuming similarly named products have the same catalogue. Check the supplied connection equipment, installed Land Rover software and supported update computer. Product and function coverage can change, so repeat the exact-build check before purchase. Coverage of fault reading does not establish safe applicability of a service routine.

Save a useful first report
Save the complete original scan before clearing anything. Keep vehicle identification privately, together with engine, gearbox, modifications, exact warning wording, cold/warm behaviour, recent repairs and tool/software version. Preserve controller names, full codes including suffixes, statuses and available freeze-frame context. Include modules that did not communicate. Clearing a fault can remove useful evidence and does not repair the underlying cause.
Limits of the scan
Reading codes, clearing memory, viewing data, resetting a reminder, commanding a component and programming a module are different capabilities. This guide contains no immobiliser, key-programming or security-access instructions and guarantees no coding, calibration, programming or active-test function. Braking, steering, suspension, significant engine symptoms or drive-control concerns need appropriate professional assessment. A scanner cannot certify mechanical engine or transmission health.
Frequently asked questions
Does 4.4 TDV8 support cover the petrol V8?
No. Displacement is shared, but the diesel engine and electronics are different.
Can one 4.4 selection cover both petrol engine families?
Do not assume so. Confirm the engine management and exact build with the tool supplier.
