For the original Range Rover Sport L320 4.2 V8 Supercharged, select Supercharged V8 engine support and confirm the individual chassis and transmission reports needed. iCarsoft LR V3.0 has an explicit early Sport Supercharged V8 selection. GAP IIDTool offers a conditional petrol L320 platform route; neither diesel coverage nor a later 5.0 Supercharged listing establishes this application.
Which vehicles this guide covers
This guide concerns the first-generation L320 Sport with the original 4.2 supercharged petrol V8. It excludes the naturally aspirated 4.4, 2.7/3.0/3.6 diesels, later 5.0 supercharged engines, full-size L322 and subsequent L494 Sport. The reviewed iCarsoft catalogue group is 2005(2006US)–2009 / Supercharged V8, with GAP’s 2006 L320 selection used as a platform-reading example. Confirm actual build and engine management.
Check the actual vehicle build, engine-management identification, transmission and installed equipment before ordering. Keep modification and repair history with the vehicle details. Ask the supplier to confirm the precise reading task; support for one engine or controller does not establish every function in a shared catalogue group.
Match the scanner to the question
| Owner question | Information to seek | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent misfire | Full 4.2 SC engine fault report and available inputs | A code or changed symptom does not prove one failed component. |
| Desired temperature or airflow reading | Exact supported parameter and the relevant operating conditions | An engine-family headline is not a parameter list. |
| Suspension, roll-control or drive warning | The fitted controller’s own report | Engine support is separate from chassis access and calibration. |

Generic OBD versus manufacturer-aware diagnostics
Generic OBD/EOBD concerns supported emissions-related powertrain information. Where the vehicle and reader implement it, this can provide useful engine codes and data. It does not establish access to ABS, suspension, transmission or body controllers. A standard-looking diagnostic connector or a successful engine connection is not proof of complete vehicle coverage. For early Freelander petrol engines, explicit management-system support is especially important.
A controller reporting no stored faults is different from one that did not communicate. Keep that distinction in a saved report, and identify systems the tool did not access. Neither a clean report nor a cleared warning certifies that the vehicle is mechanically sound.
The owner problem behind the scanner choice
The owner discussion provides this context. A 2006 4.2 SC Sport owner reported persistent misfiring despite changing several parts and asked about further diagnostic information. Replies asked which cylinders were involved and whether airflow and coolant-temperature readings responded. The thread illustrates why the original code set and supported inputs matter; the replies are not a verified diagnosis or an instruction to replace more components.
Separate the symptom, the code and the reading
“Misfire” on a dashboard or reader is not a complete report. Keep the full code, status and module together with cold/hot behaviour and recent repair history. A changed symptom after a component is disconnected does not, on its own, confirm that component is faulty. This guide contains no disconnection tests, boost-control procedures or engine-repair instructions.
The GAP L320 → 2006 table marks Engine Petrol for fault reading/clearing and separately lists suspension, parking brake, transmission, transfer case and active roll control. A combined platform list does not specify every 4.2 SC live parameter or prove that each controller is installed. Use exact-engine and exact-function confirmation; GAP itself flags that the functionality table may be incomplete or incorrect.
iCarsoft LR V3.0: what the lookup establishes
The LR V3.0 lookup provides LANDROVER → Range Rover Sport → 2005(2006US)–2009 → Supercharged V8. Its ECM diagnostic card lists fault reading and clearing, live data, module information and freeze-data reading. That is a documented conditional route, rather than proof that a later Supercharged, naturally aspirated V8 or diesel scanner package has the same support. See the official manufacturer function lookup.
Which option makes sense here?
Shortlist LR V3.0 for a confirmed handheld reading task, or compare IIDTool for repeated engine and fitted-chassis reporting. Ask about the exact airflow, temperature or other parameter required rather than assuming a broad live-data headline includes it. For an unresolved misfire after substantial work, an appropriately equipped specialist can interpret the report alongside mechanical evidence.
Choose a route for the actual reading task
First decide whether the task is engine fault reading, a specific live parameter or a report from a different fitted controller. For a single unresolved problem, a suitably equipped specialist may be more useful than purchasing a tool with unconfirmed access. For repeated ownership work, compare the required reading coverage and hardware, computer/app and licence arrangements together.
The Amazon panels here link to the iCarsoft LR V3.0 search, with affiliate disclosure alongside them. They do not link directly to pscan or GAP IIDTool and do not guarantee that every result suits this vehicle. An early MEMS1.9 owner should not treat the panel as confirmation of iCarsoft engine compatibility. Check the exact product, seller, vehicle build, fitted controller, required reading function and return terms before purchase.
Hardware, app, licences and updates
GAP separates coverage by model-year group and IIDTool hardware generation. Confirm G3 versus G4 and any adapter requirement for the actual vehicle with GAP or the supplier. Use the manufacturer-approved connection equipment; this guide provides no diagnostic-socket modification instructions. Confirm the supported phone/tablet, current app and tool firmware.
The BT product includes one VIN licence for its VIN-locked functions; additional licences and Pro conditions differ. Do not assume that buying the newest hardware adds every routine to an older vehicle. For iCarsoft, confirm the LR V3.0 model, genuine hardware, current vehicle software, connection equipment and supported update computer. A service-menu heading is not evidence that the routine applies safely to the individual build.

Save a useful first report
Save the original report before clearing anything. Record the private VIN/build identification, engine, gearbox, fitted equipment, exact warning wording, symptoms, recent repairs and tool/software version. Keep the controller name, full code including suffix, status, description and any available freeze-frame or live-data context. Distinguish a controller reporting no faults from one that did not communicate, and identify systems the tool did not access. A code is evidence for investigation, rather than a parts order; clearing it does not repair the cause.
Limits of the scan
Reading faults, clearing faults, viewing data, running a service routine, commanding an active test and programming a module are different capabilities. This guide guarantees none of the latter functions. It contains no immobiliser, key-programming, security-access, brake-repair, suspension-calibration or forced-regeneration instructions. Symptoms affecting braking, steering, suspension or drive control need appropriate professional assessment. A scanner cannot certify mechanical engine or gearbox condition.
Frequently asked questions
Is later 5.0 Supercharged support proof for the original 4.2?
No. Match the 4.2 engine, L320 build and required reading function.
Does Engine Petrol on a platform matrix prove every 4.2 SC parameter?
No. Obtain exact-function confirmation from the manufacturer or supplier.
Does reading an active-roll or suspension fault establish calibration support?
No. Reading, clearing, calibration and commanding components are different capabilities.
