Choose a scanner for the L322 4.4 TDV8 by the controllers it can read and the hardware your build requires. A generic engine result is useful evidence within its limits, but it is not an all-system report. iCarsoft LR V3.0 is a standalone handheld candidate; GAP IIDTool BT is a specialist alternative whose late-L322 hardware conditions deserve particular attention.
Which vehicles this guide covers
This guide covers the full-size L322 Range Rover with the original 4.4-litre TDV8 diesel. It excludes the L322 4.4 petrol V8, the 3.6 TDV8, the early 3.0 TD6 and the subsequent L405. The same 4.4 capacity or TDV8 label in a listing is not sufficient identification.
Use the actual build/model year, engine and gearbox identity when checking coverage. iCarsoft’s 2010–2012 Range Rover Diesel V8 group and GAP’s 2011 L322 selection provide useful documentary starting points. Neither turns a mixed catalogue into a definitive specification sheet for every car.
Match the scanner to the question
| Owner question | Information to seek | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Engine and gearbox warnings together | Separate engine and transmission reports, with full code suffixes | The dashboard wording does not identify one failed component. |
| No codes despite other warnings | Which controllers communicated and which did not | No generic codes is not an all-system clean bill. |
| ABS or suspension concerns | Supported ABS and ride-level information | Reading a warning does not certify safe operation. |
| Buying a late-L322 IIDTool | Correct hardware, adapter conditions and licence terms | G3 and G4 packages are not automatically interchangeable. |

Generic OBD and manufacturer-aware diagnostics
A compatible generic EOBD reader can retrieve supported emissions-related powertrain codes, readiness information, freeze-frame and standard live data. It can be useful for an engine warning, and some transmission-related powertrain codes may also be available. A successful generic connection does not establish access to the separate ABS, chassis, body or transmission controllers. Check whether the result came from the generic OBD menu or a manufacturer-specific vehicle selection.
If an engine-only scan shows no faults, retain that result but ask which systems were actually accessed. Keep a controller that answered with no stored faults separate from a controller that could not be reached. This distinction matters more than an impressive total number of reset functions.
Why a no-code report needs context
In a 4.4 TDV8 owner report, engine and gearbox warnings were followed by starting difficulties and a newly purchased reader showing no codes. The reader’s full identity and accessed controllers were not established. The account illustrates an information gap, not proof that all generic readers fail or that any particular proposed repair was correct.
A useful report should preserve what the engine, transmission and affected chassis controllers actually said, alongside the symptoms and the sequence of events. Do not adopt battery, fuel-system or transmission diagnoses from replies as findings about another vehicle. A warning after other events can have several interpretations until the relevant evidence is collected.
iCarsoft LR V3.0: a reading shortlist with a specific group
The manufacturer’s current function lookup provides LR V3.0 → LANDROVER → Range Rover → 2010–2012 → Diesel V8. Use the diagnostic entries and their reading functions rather than the service-function count. Confirm the engine ECU, actual transmission controller and affected chassis system for your build.
A list that includes several equipment choices is not a promise that your car has all of them. Ask what fault status, descriptions and live data are available for the required controller, and confirm the current software. A transmission service menu is not evidence that an adaptation reset is appropriate for a gearbox warning.
GAP IIDTool: the later L322 hardware conditions matter
The GAP hardware table treats the 2010–2012 L322 differently from earlier cars: G3 is listed, while G4 has an adapter-related condition. Obtain confirmation of the complete supported package and approved adapter from GAP or the supplier. This guide gives no connector rewiring or modification instructions.
GAP’s 2011 L322 functionality selection includes TDV8 engine, ABS, parking-brake, ride-level, transfer-case and transmission entries with fault reading and live values. It also displays multiple transmission and engine variants. That is evidence for an exact-vehicle enquiry, not a basis to claim that every listed gearbox or ECU is fitted to a 4.4.
Which buying route makes sense?
For an uncomplicated standalone reading route, investigate LR V3.0 against your exact task. For continuing Land Rover ownership, compare the appropriate IIDTool package and phone requirements. Have the supplier state any adapter requirement before payment. The approved affiliate search leads to iCarsoft options; it is not a verified destination for GAP hardware. Avoid buying a reset function as a substitute for an evidence-based gearbox diagnosis.
Hardware, updates and licences
GAP IIDTool BT uses a compatible iOS or Android device; check the current app, Bluetooth and operating-system requirements before buying. Firmware updating is separate from connecting at the car. GAP’s licence policy separates supported fault reading and live values from advanced VIN-licensed functions. A BT package includes a VIN licence for relevant advanced work; do not describe all reading as locked to one car. Check ownership transfer and included hardware when considering a used unit. For iCarsoft, confirm genuine hardware, the serial-specific updater, supported computer and included card reader or cable.

Keep the first report useful
Save the original report before clearing anything. Record the private VIN/build identification, engine, gearbox, fitted equipment, exact warning wording, symptoms, recent repairs and tool/software version. Keep the controller name, full code including suffix, status, description and any available freeze-frame or live-data context. Distinguish a controller reporting no faults from one that did not communicate, and identify systems the tool did not access. A code is evidence for investigation, rather than a parts order; clearing it does not repair the cause.
What this guide does not promise
Reading faults, clearing faults, viewing data, running a service routine, commanding an active test and programming a module are different capabilities. This guide guarantees none of the latter functions. It contains no immobiliser, key-programming, security-access, brake-repair, suspension-calibration or forced-regeneration instructions. Symptoms affecting braking, steering, suspension or drive control need appropriate professional assessment. A scanner cannot certify mechanical engine or gearbox condition.
Frequently asked questions
Does 4.4 V8 in a product listing mean 4.4 TDV8?
No. It can describe a petrol engine or another generation. Specify full-size L322, diesel TDV8, actual build and controller.
Does a gearbox warning require an adaptation reset?
The warning alone does not establish that. Save the relevant reports and obtain an appropriate diagnosis; this guide does not recommend reset procedures.
Is reading locked to one VIN on IIDTool?
GAP distinguishes supported fault reading and live values from advanced VIN-licensed functions. Check the current package and ownership terms rather than assuming all access is locked to one car.
