For an L322 3.6 TDV8, a useful scanner needs to answer more than whether generic engine codes are present. Engine, transmission, suspension, parking-brake and transfer-case questions involve different controllers. iCarsoft LR V3.0 is a handheld reading candidate, while GAP IIDTool BT offers a specialist Land Rover route—but the hardware version and the actual build need checking before either purchase.
Which vehicles this guide covers
This guide covers the full-size Range Rover L322 with its original 3.6-litre TDV8 diesel. It excludes the earlier 3.0 TD6, petrol L322 variants, the later 4.4 TDV8 and the Range Rover Sport. Those names can share search results without sharing the same diagnostic coverage.
Identify the build/model year from the vehicle records, not just the registration plate. iCarsoft’s relevant 2007–2009 Range Rover Diesel V8 group is a starting point, not proof for every late-registered or different-build 3.6. A vehicle falling in another build group needs that separate lookup and hardware confirmation.
Match the scanner to the question
| Owner question | Information to seek | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Engine warning or reduced performance | Correct TDV8 engine controller report and supported data | A code does not prove a turbo, injector or other part has failed. |
| Gearbox warning | Actual automatic transmission controller and engine context | An engine scan alone is not a full gearbox diagnosis. |
| Suspension or parking-brake warning | Relevant chassis or parking-brake controller | A reset menu does not establish the cause or certify safe operation. |
| Choosing IIDTool hardware | Written confirmation for the exact L322 build | A newer hardware number does not mean broader early-L322 support. |

Generic OBD and manufacturer-aware diagnostics
A compatible generic EOBD reader can retrieve supported emissions-related powertrain codes, readiness information, freeze-frame and standard live data. It can be useful for an engine warning, and some transmission-related powertrain codes may also be available. A successful generic connection does not establish access to the separate ABS, chassis, body or transmission controllers. Check whether the result came from the generic OBD menu or a manufacturer-specific vehicle selection.
Generic emissions information can still be useful where supported. Keep the generic result separate from the Land Rover vehicle selection: “no codes” in the first menu is not a report on the suspension, parking brake or transfer case.
Buy for readable evidence, not a reset count
A fullfatrr diagnostic-tool discussion begins with an owner wanting understandable fault descriptions rather than setting changes. Its opening post does not establish a 3.6-litre engine, so this is a platform-level buying question. Replies mentioning different engines cannot verify compatibility for your 3.6.
For this article, the practical answer is to specify controller access and a report you can save. Request the full code, suffix, status and controller name. A marketing claim about dozens of resets is less useful than confirmation that the scanner can read the particular controller producing your warning.
iCarsoft: use the diesel group and the actual task
The official iCarsoft lookup lists LR V3.0 → LANDROVER → Range Rover → 2007–2009 → Diesel V8, with engine, transmission, ride-level, parking-brake and transfer-case diagnostic entries. That supports a handheld shortlist, subject to the actual build and the reading function within each entry.
The list also includes equipment that may not be fitted. It is not proof that every routine or live value works on every 3.6. Ask the supplier to confirm the precise engine, gearbox and required controller, with the current software version. Check a different year group separately rather than forcing the vehicle into this one.
GAP: confirm the L322 hardware before ordering
GAP’s official coverage table marks the 2002–2009 L322 for G3 hardware; G4 is not marked as the supported replacement for that group. Later L322 rows have different conditions. This is a strong reason to ask for the correct complete package for your actual build, rather than buying G4 simply because it is newer.
In the 2008 L322 functionality selection, GAP lists TDV8 engine, transmission, ABS, ride-level, parking-brake and transfer-case entries with fault-reading and live-value support. The catalogue warns that information may be incomplete or incorrect and contains mixed powertrain entries. Treat this as a documented selection route, not confirmation that every displayed ECU is fitted to your vehicle.
Which buying route makes sense?
Shortlist LR V3.0 for a supplier-confirmed handheld reading job. Choose the appropriate IIDTool package if a specialist Land Rover ownership route and phone interface suit you. For an isolated complex or non-communicating fault, paying a properly equipped specialist for a saved controller report may be more useful than buying a tool for unconfirmed coverage. The affiliate search is specifically for iCarsoft and does not sell you a verified GAP package.
Hardware, updates and licences
GAP IIDTool BT uses a compatible iOS or Android device; check the current app, Bluetooth and operating-system requirements before buying. Firmware updating is separate from connecting at the car. GAP’s licence policy separates supported fault reading and live values from advanced VIN-licensed functions. A BT package includes a VIN licence for relevant advanced work; do not describe all reading as locked to one car. Check ownership transfer and included hardware when considering a used unit. For iCarsoft, confirm genuine hardware, the serial-specific updater, supported computer and included card reader or cable.

Keep the first report useful
Save the original report before clearing anything. Record the private VIN/build identification, engine, gearbox, fitted equipment, exact warning wording, symptoms, recent repairs and tool/software version. Keep the controller name, full code including suffix, status, description and any available freeze-frame or live-data context. Distinguish a controller reporting no faults from one that did not communicate, and identify systems the tool did not access. A code is evidence for investigation, rather than a parts order; clearing it does not repair the cause.
What this guide does not promise
Reading faults, clearing faults, viewing data, running a service routine, commanding an active test and programming a module are different capabilities. This guide guarantees none of the latter functions. It contains no immobiliser, key-programming, security-access, brake-repair, suspension-calibration or forced-regeneration instructions. Symptoms affecting braking, steering, suspension or drive control need appropriate professional assessment. A scanner cannot certify mechanical engine or gearbox condition.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as the 3.0 TD6 guide?
No. The engine and build groups differ. Select L322 3.6 TDV8 coverage, not the earlier TD6 or a similarly named Range Rover Sport.
Should I automatically choose IIDTool G4?
No. GAP’s hardware table separates L322 build groups. Confirm the exact supported version and any approved adapter conditions before ordering.
Can a scanner prove both turbos are healthy?
No. Supported codes and live values can inform diagnosis, but they do not certify mechanical condition or justify parts replacement on their own.
