A Jaguar XJR X350 can have an obvious air-suspension problem without providing a helpful engine code. One documented owner case goes further: even the suspension scan reported no codes, while live data helped identify an unresponsive height sensor. That is a strong example of why useful Jaguar-aware access extends beyond a basic code list.

Which vehicles this guide covers

This guide covers the X350 XJR with the supercharged 4.2-litre petrol V8, focusing on early 2003–2005 cars. The checked scanner catalogue uses the broader XJ 2002–2005 Supercharged V8 group; confirm the actual X350 build when selecting a tool.

Do not confuse it with an X308 XJR, a naturally aspirated X350 4.2 or an X351 5.0. Suspension equipment and sensor arrangements also need checking. The owner case below explicitly identifies a four-height-sensor 2004 XJR.

What the extra diagnostic access buys you

Here, “generic” means the standard emissions-related OBD/EOBD mode. It can retrieve supported engine-emissions codes, readiness information, freeze frames and standard live values. It does not interrogate every controller in the car. Some multi-brand scanners also have enhanced Jaguar coverage; the useful difference is confirmed access to your vehicle and required module, rather than the badge on the tool.

Standard emissions diagnostics concern supported engine/emissions information. They do not interrogate the air-suspension controller simply because the reader fits the diagnostic socket. For this XJR, suspension-module fault reading and usable live data are the capabilities worth checking.

A researched example from this vehicle

In “RESOLVED: Air Suspension – Front High”, owner wwr described a 2004 XJR whose front rose to maximum height while the rear remained normal. A Foxwell NT510 reported no air-suspension module codes.

The owner then used that tool’s live-data facility and reported finding no response from the front-right height sensor. They said replacing it restored normal height, with around 100 miles subsequently covered. This is an attributed owner outcome, not an independently verified repair finding.

The example demonstrates why code reading alone can be insufficient. It is evidence of a reported result with a Foxwell NT510 on that car, not proof that LR V3.0 exposes the same parameters or that every high-riding XJR needs a sensor. No suspension manipulation or repair procedure is reproduced here.

How a Jaguar-aware reader can dig deeper

The first step beyond generic OBD is access to the air-suspension module itself. A supported Jaguar-aware reader can retrieve that controller’s records instead of presenting an engine-only result as if it describes the whole vehicle.

The second step is useful data. A controller can accept an implausible or unhelpful input without presenting the owner with an obvious stored code. The practical question is whether the tool displays the relevant sensor values clearly enough for professional interpretation. Exact parameters and units must be confirmed for the car and software.

A height-related symptom also needs physical inspection. Module data cannot on its own prove the condition of air springs, linkages, wiring or other hardware. The point of the extra information is to guide the next checks and challenge guesses, not to replace those checks.

Other questions the engine scan does not answer

A generic reader may still be adequate for an initial supported engine-emissions investigation. The supercharged V8 does not make standard OBD information worthless. It makes the distinction between an engine question and a suspension question particularly important.

Ask the supplier which controller name appears on screen. The checked iCarsoft catalogue calls it ASU, while the owner calls the air-suspension module ASM. A different label is not proof of a different function; confirm the system and exact build rather than buying on an acronym alone.

iCarsoft LR V3.0 and the evidence behind the shortlist

The official iCarsoft function lookup, reviewed on 3 November 2026, gives the route LR V3.0 > JAGUAR > XJ > 2002-2005 > Supercharged V8. The ASU (Air suspension module) card lists Read Fault Code, Live Data and Clear Fault Memory. These are documentary catalogue entries, rather than an Unusual Cars test of an individual car.

For this early supercharged V8 group, the ASU card lists only Read Fault Code, Live Data and Clear Fault Memory. It does not list Module Information or Read Freeze Data. The Live Data category still does not confirm individual height values, pressure values or units, so the owner’s Foxwell results must not be transferred to LR V3.0.

A “Live Data” category does not establish every available parameter. Ask the supplier to confirm the particular values you need. Shared catalogue groups can contain equipment absent from your car, and a service-menu heading is not proof of a fitted system. Fault reading does not establish reset, active-test, coding, calibration or programming support.

Hardware, updates and the buying check

The manufacturer’s LR V3.0 page describes a standalone handheld, a 16-pin cable and PC-based updates, with lifetime free software upgrades advertised. Confirm current supply, update requirements and support before ordering.

Ask for exact X350 XJR air-suspension communication and the required height-sensor values, with a current software example if possible. Confirm the sensor arrangement. If the seller only demonstrates engine codes or repeats a broad air-suspension service claim, the essential question remains unanswered.

Compare a Jaguar-aware handheld, an enhanced multi-brand alternative and an equipped Jaguar specialist against the same task. An owner’s report from another scanner is not proof that LR V3.0 will produce the same result. Ask about current software, genuine supply, warranty and return terms. Check compatibility privately using the build details or VIN; registration year alone may be insufficient.

Is a vehicle-specific scanner worth the investment?

For a long-term XJR owner, a reader with confirmed suspension data can be a worthwhile investment. It offers a route to evidence outside the engine and, as the owner case illustrates, sometimes beyond the presence or absence of fault codes.

Compare that benefit with paying an equipped specialist for diagnosis. A lower purchase price is not a saving if the required values are missing. Neither a handheld nor a garage scan guarantees a particular repair cost or excludes every mechanical fault.

Preserve a useful report before clearing anything

Save the reporting controller, complete code and suffix, current or stored status, available freeze-frame details and tool/software version. Record the exact warning, when it appeared, operating conditions, recent work and symptoms. Keep modules that did not communicate separate from modules that connected and reported no codes. Clearing removes evidence; it does not repair a fault.

Limits and professional help

Abnormal ride height, suspension warnings or changed handling need professional assessment. Air suspension can change height; this guide gives no lifting, depressurisation, height-adjustment, component-replacement or calibration instructions. A scanner cannot certify safe operation.

This is a guide to choosing a reading route. It gives no brake-release, roof override, air-suspension repair, forced-regeneration, key-programming or security-access instructions, and guarantees no coding, calibration, programming or active-test functions. A scan cannot certify mechanical health or safe operation.
