For an early Range Rover Evoque L538 2.0 Si4 petrol, look for explicit GTDI 2.0L support and confirm the gearbox and fitted AWD systems separately. iCarsoft LR V3.0 has that engine selection in its reviewed 2012–2013 and 2014–2015 groups. A diesel Evoque guide or a later Si4 badge does not establish identical coverage.
Which vehicles this guide covers
This guide is limited to early first-generation L538 Si4 GTDI 2.0 petrol applications represented by the 2012–2013 and 2014–2015 catalogue groups checked here. It excludes diesel engines, later Ingenium petrol applications, the Convertible and the second-generation L551. A late registration or a Si4 badge is insufficient: verify the actual build, engine-management identification, transmission and market.
The manufacturer’s function lookup explicitly separates Evoque year groups and engine choices. The two reviewed early groups each provide GTDI 2.0L. This supports a narrowly defined early-petrol reading route, not a blanket claim for every 2.0 petrol Evoque across both generations. Record the fitted gearbox rather than assuming that a general transmission listing covers every version.
Match the scanner to the question
| Owner question | Information to seek | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Engine warning on early Si4 petrol | GTDI 2.0L engine report and supported data | Diesel DPF or EGR claims are not petrol coverage. |
| Gearbox or AWD message | The actual fitted transmission or AWD controller report | Engine communication alone does not answer this. |
| Later Si4 or Convertible listing | Exact engine generation and body/build identification | The badge does not establish early-GTDI compatibility. |

Generic OBD versus manufacturer-aware diagnostics
A generic OBD/EOBD reader can be useful for supported emissions-related powertrain codes and data. That is different from access to the vehicle’s other controllers. A successful engine connection does not establish ABS, suspension, AWD, transmission or body-system access. Choose the tool around the question you need answered, rather than the number of functions advertised on its packaging.
Manufacturer-aware diagnostics can add access to specifically supported controllers and their data. Check the exact engine, build, fitted equipment and required reading function. A scanner may communicate with one system while another is unsupported or unavailable. Keep “no stored faults” separate from “no communication” in the report; neither is a certificate of mechanical condition.
The owner question behind the scanner choice
Owner research found a Si4 discussion about a Low Battery / Please Start Engine warning. The owner identifies that vehicle as a 2019 Si4, which is outside this guide’s early GTDI scope. It is useful only as an example of why warning wording, engine generation and recent battery work need recording; it is not evidence of an early-GTDI defect, battery-reset support or compatibility. No early-petrol failure-rate claim is made here. Read the owner discussion.
What to record before interpreting a code
An engine warning and a battery or AWD message need different questions. Generic engine OBD can be useful for supported emissions-related faults, but it does not establish access to battery-management, transmission or AWD information. Preserve each message and the module reporting it. A power-supply concern needs appropriate assessment; repeatedly clearing codes is not a substitute for identifying the cause. This guide gives no battery-replacement, reset, coding or turbocharger-repair instructions.
iCarsoft LR V3.0: what the lookup establishes
The LR V3.0 lookup provides LANDROVER → Range Rover Evoque → 2012–2013 → GTDI 2.0L, and the separate 2014–2015 → GTDI 2.0L route. The reviewed ECM cards list fault reading/clearing, live data, module information and freeze-data reading. These are the supported reading categories evidenced here. Any specific boost, fuel-pressure, misfire or battery-related parameter still needs confirmation for the actual controller and software. Check the official iCarsoft function lookup.
These are manufacturer-listed reading categories, not results from Unusual Cars testing. The reviewed cards also contain other feature headings; those are not used here to promise active tests, resets, calibration or programming. For a particular live value, ask the supplier to name it and confirm it for the fitted controller and current vehicle software.
GAP IIDTool: check platform, year and hardware
GAP’s L538 → 2013 table lists PCM-Engine GTDI, ABS, AWDCM-All Wheel Drive and transmission reporting separately. Its hardware table includes the L538 2011–2019 group with generation-dependent connection conditions. This does not establish that every listed module is fitted or that the same gearbox and parameters apply across the whole period. Confirm the exact petrol engine, transmission, tool hardware and reading task. See GAP’s functionality and hardware tables.
Which diagnostic route makes sense?
For an occasional supported engine-emissions question, a basic EOBD reader may be sufficient for an initial report. For handheld access to specifically confirmed manufacturer systems, shortlist LR V3.0. For repeated ownership work involving engine and fitted-chassis reporting, compare the appropriate IIDTool package. If one unresolved fault is the only reason for buying, a suitably equipped specialist’s report may be more useful than a tool whose exact access remains unconfirmed.
Before paying, send the supplier the actual vehicle details and a short list of tasks: the engine fault report, the particular live parameter, or the named fitted controller. Obtain confirmation for those tasks. Do not treat “Land Rover compatible” or a service-menu heading as a guarantee of every function. Check genuine product identity, seller, return terms and current software coverage.
Hardware, devices, licences and updates
GAP separates G3 and G4 hardware and model-year coverage. Early L322 coverage especially needs the correct hardware choice; newer hardware is not automatically the right package for every older model. Confirm any manufacturer-approved adapter and supported phone/tablet, app and firmware. This guide gives no diagnostic-socket modification instructions. The BT product includes one VIN licence for VIN-locked functions; additional licences and Pro terms differ.
For iCarsoft, confirm LR V3.0 rather than assuming similarly named products have the same catalogue. Check the supplied connection equipment, installed Land Rover software and supported update computer. Product and function coverage can change, so repeat the exact-build check before purchase. Coverage of fault reading does not establish safe applicability of a service routine.

Save a useful first report
Save the complete original scan before clearing anything. Keep vehicle identification privately, together with engine, gearbox, modifications, exact warning wording, cold/warm behaviour, recent repairs and tool/software version. Preserve controller names, full codes including suffixes, statuses and available freeze-frame context. Include modules that did not communicate. Clearing a fault can remove useful evidence and does not repair the underlying cause.
Limits of the scan
Reading codes, clearing memory, viewing data, resetting a reminder, commanding a component and programming a module are different capabilities. This guide contains no immobiliser, key-programming or security-access instructions and guarantees no coding, calibration, programming or active-test function. Braking, steering, suspension, significant engine symptoms or drive-control concerns need appropriate professional assessment. A scanner cannot certify mechanical engine or transmission health.
Frequently asked questions
Does every Si4 Evoque use the same scanner selection?
No. Verify engine generation, build and the required function.
Does an engine code reader establish battery-management reset support?
No. Fault reading, live data and resets are separate capabilities.
