The Jaguar S-Type R’s supercharged V8 may be the main attraction, but an engine-only reader is a limited answer to a parking-brake warning. A Jaguar-aware scanner can provide access to supported chassis and body modules, helping an owner obtain the right diagnostic evidence before guessing at parts.
Which vehicles this guide covers
This guide focuses on the X200 S-Type R with the supercharged 4.2-litre V8, especially 2004–2005 cars. It is separate from the naturally aspirated 4.2 guide. Confirm model year from the vehicle information rather than assuming the registration date identifies every system.
An important buying limitation is that the checked iCarsoft entry is labelled AJ61 4.2L and does not separately name the R or supercharged version. It supports a shortlist enquiry, not an unconditional recommendation for every S-Type R.
What the extra diagnostic access buys you
Here, “generic” means the standard emissions-related OBD/EOBD mode. It can retrieve supported engine-emissions codes, readiness information, freeze frames and standard live values. It does not interrogate every controller in the car. Some multi-brand scanners also have enhanced Jaguar coverage; the useful difference is confirmed access to your vehicle and required module, rather than the badge on the tool.
The extra value is access to the controller associated with the actual symptom. Standard emissions mode can still help with supported V8 engine faults. It does not provide a complete parking-brake investigation, and a code reader cannot assess the physical condition of the braking system.
Match the scanner to the owner question
| Owner question | Extra information to seek | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Parking-brake warning or inability to apply it | Jaguar PBM records on the confirmed R build | Engine-only “no codes” is not a parking-brake result |
| Several brake-related messages | Exact warning identification and supported module reports | Different dashboard warnings must not be treated as interchangeable |
| Supercharged V8 engine warning | Supported emissions and enhanced engine information | Reading engine codes cannot certify the brakes |

A researched example from this vehicle
In a 2004 S-Type R owner discussion, turkay described a parking brake that would no longer engage. Charging the battery had not resolved it. The owner initially called a second warning an ABS light, then corrected this to a brake-pad warning.
That correction matters. Repeating only the opening post would misrepresent the problem and might send the next owner towards the wrong system. The thread ended without a confirmed repair. Another contributor highlighted the need for a reader capable of Jaguar chassis/module codes rather than basic OBD alone.
The case therefore supports a diagnostic-access lesson, not a claimed fix. Record the exact messages and read the relevant supported module before attributing everything to one component. The reported soft brake pedal also requires professional examination; a scanner cannot establish its mechanical cause.
How a Jaguar-aware reader can dig deeper
For the parking-brake complaint, the purchasing question is whether the reader can connect to this R’s PBM and retrieve its actual code record. If it can, that adds information unavailable from an engine-only emissions scan even when the V8 itself runs normally.
Jaguar’s JTB00208NAS2 separately includes S-Type within stated year/VIN limits and its North American market scope. It documents a post-service calibration condition with possible C1129-39 or C1129-3A. This is another reason to retain the complete fault and service history rather than assume an actuator has failed.
The bulletin does not diagnose the forum car, and it must not be applied to a UK R without checking applicability. Fault retrieval is the useful extra capability discussed here. Repair, calibration and decisions about brake components remain separate tasks for an equipped professional.
Other questions the engine scan does not answer
The warning correction in the owner case illustrates why a whole-car scan must retain controller names. A parking-brake record, an ABS record and a pad-wear message are not interchangeable evidence. Report what the car actually displays and which module actually stored a fault.
For a used S-Type R, a diagnostic report can complement service history and an inspection. It cannot demonstrate supercharger condition, brake performance or the absence of every intermittent problem. Modules that fail to communicate need an explanation rather than a “clear” label.
iCarsoft LR V3.0 and the evidence behind the shortlist
The official iCarsoft function lookup, reviewed on 3 November 2026, gives the route LR V3.0 > JAGUAR > S_Type > 2004-2005 > AJ61 4.2L. The PBM (Parking brake control module) card lists Read Fault Code, Live Data, Module Information, Read Freeze Data and Clear Fault Memory. These are documentary catalogue entries, rather than an Unusual Cars test of an individual car.
The PBM card has useful reading categories, but the engine label does not distinguish the supercharged R. Before purchasing, obtain confirmation for the exact S-Type R model year/build and PBM. If the supplier cannot establish that, choose another verified tool or a specialist scan.
A “Live Data” category does not establish every available parameter. Ask the supplier to confirm the particular values you need. Shared catalogue groups can contain equipment absent from your car, and a service-menu heading is not proof of a fitted system. Fault reading does not establish reset, active-test, coding, calibration or programming support.
Hardware, updates and the buying check
The manufacturer’s LR V3.0 page describes a standalone handheld, a 16-pin cable and PC-based updates, with lifetime free software upgrades advertised. Confirm current supply, update requirements and support before ordering.
Send a supplier the task: “Read Jaguar-specific parking-brake module codes on my S-Type R, retaining complete code detail.” Request exact-build confirmation rather than an answer that simply repeats “S-Type 4.2 supported”. Ask separately about any required ABS or transmission access.
Compare a Jaguar-aware handheld, an enhanced multi-brand alternative and an equipped Jaguar specialist against the same task. An owner’s report from another scanner is not proof that LR V3.0 will produce the same result. Ask about current software, genuine supply, warranty and return terms. Check compatibility privately using the build details or VIN; registration year alone may be insufficient.

Is a vehicle-specific scanner worth the investment?
A suitable reader can be worthwhile for an owner maintaining an older performance Jaguar, particularly where dashboard messages involve systems beyond the engine. The practical gain is a better-informed investigation and a report to share with a workshop.
There is little value in buying an enhanced reader whose R compatibility remains uncertain. Resolve that point first, then compare its cost with a specialist diagnostic visit. This guide makes no promise of avoided repairs, lower bills or a successful home fix.
Preserve a useful report before clearing anything
Save the reporting controller, complete code and suffix, current or stored status, available freeze-frame details and tool/software version. Record the exact warning, when it appeared, operating conditions, recent work and symptoms. Keep modules that did not communicate separate from modules that connected and reported no codes. Clearing removes evidence; it does not repair a fault.
Limits and professional help
A soft or altered brake pedal, parking-brake failure or brake warning needs professional assessment. Do not continue driving on the strength of an engine scan. This guide gives no brake-reset, release, calibration or repair instructions.
This is a guide to choosing a reading route. It gives no brake-release, roof override, air-suspension repair, forced-regeneration, key-programming or security-access instructions, and guarantees no coding, calibration, programming or active-test functions. A scan cannot certify mechanical health or safe operation.
