An exhaust-filter warning on an E-Pace 2.0 diesel does not identify a replacement DPF by itself. Generic OBD2 can already reveal useful emissions codes. The case for a Jaguar-aware scanner is the complete diagnostic context and confirmed access to additional controllers, with the exact required data checked before purchase.
Which vehicles this guide covers
This guide covers the X540 E-Pace 2.0 Ingenium diesel within the checked 2018–2020 catalogue group. The selected label is AJ20-D4/AJ21-D4 2.0L DIESEL. The technical example is specifically limited to AJ20-D4 by Jaguar’s bulletin; it is not extended to every engine in the combined catalogue label.
It excludes petrol, plug-in hybrid, later catalogue selections and any car with emissions-system modifications. Confirm actual engine, build and market. The lookup contains broadly shared equipment headings, so it must not be treated as a specification list for an individual E-Pace.
What the extra diagnostic access buys you
Here, “generic” means the standard emissions-related OBD/EOBD mode. It can retrieve supported engine-emissions codes, readiness information, freeze frames and standard live values. It does not interrogate every controller in the car. Some multi-brand scanners also have enhanced Jaguar coverage; the useful difference is confirmed access to your vehicle and required module, rather than the badge on the tool.
Do not sell enhanced scanning on the false premise that DPF-related P-codes are necessarily invisible to a generic reader. A supported standard emissions code can be a useful first result. What matters next is the full description, suffix where supplied, operating context and the additional information actually available.
Match the scanner to the owner question
| Owner question | Extra information to seek | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Exhaust filter full warning | Full PCM report and available context | A warning is not a measurement of the filter’s physical condition. |
| Temperature-sensor plausibility question | Complete code, suffix and confirmed supporting parameters | A generic reader may already show the base P-code. |
| ABS or chassis warning as a separate complaint | Confirmed ABS-controller report | Engine-emissions mode does not request ABS faults. |

A researched example from this vehicle
A UK owner of a 2018 E-Pace reported an Exhaust filter full message and asked whether a new filter was needed. The account does not give the engine identifier, full diagnostic report or a verified repair, so it cannot establish that replacement was necessary.
For a specific documented AJ20-D4 example, Jaguar’s SSM74309 describes P242B-64 in PCM and exhaust-temperature signal plausibility problems associated with loose or dislodged sensors. This is a different level of information from the general description “filter full”. It is not a diagnosis of the owner’s vehicle.
The base P242B may be available through standard emissions diagnostics. The benefit of an appropriate Jaguar-aware route is retaining the complete manufacturer-context report and confirmed supporting information, not claiming exclusive access to every P-code.
How a Jaguar-aware reader can dig deeper
Ask for the complete PCM report, including status and available freeze information, before clearing it. For a temperature plausibility investigation, ask the supplier which exhaust-temperature values the tool exposes on your exact build. A Live Data category does not prove a particular sensor display.
A technician may need other documented measurements to distinguish a monitoring problem from filter loading or another engine issue. Soot estimates, differential pressure, regeneration history and individual temperature channels are buying questions requiring confirmation here, not promised LR V3.0 functions.
For an additional chassis complaint, the checked ABS entry provides a separate manufacturer-aware route to investigate. An illustrative distinction is a recorded ABS wheel-input condition versus an empty engine report: the latter has not queried the braking controller. No such chassis fault is claimed for the filter-warning owner.
Other questions the engine scan does not answer
A tool’s service menu does not establish that a forced regeneration is appropriate or safe. This article gives no regeneration procedure, emissions deletion advice or software modification instructions. The presence of a menu is not a repair recommendation.
Mechanical engine condition and the physical state of exhaust components cannot be certified by a clear scan. Persistent warnings, starting restrictions or abnormal running need appropriate professional assessment and vehicle-specific information.
iCarsoft LR V3.0 and the evidence behind the shortlist
The official iCarsoft function lookup, reviewed on 3 November 2026, gives the route LR V3.0 → JAGUAR → E-Pace → 2018-2020 → AJ20-D4/AJ21-D4 2.0L DIESEL. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) card lists Read Fault Code, Live Data, Module Information, Read Freeze Data and Clear Fault Memory. These are documentary catalogue entries, rather than an Unusual Cars test of an individual car.
The selected PCM and Anti-Lock Brake System Control Module [ABS] cards each list fault reading, live data, module information, freeze data and clearing. These category entries do not enumerate DPF or wheel-speed parameters. Shared hybrid/petrol service headings must not be read as equipment fitted to this diesel.
A “Live Data” category does not establish every available parameter. Ask the supplier to confirm the particular values you need. Shared catalogue groups can contain equipment absent from your car, and a service-menu heading is not proof of a fitted system. Fault reading does not establish reset, active-test, coding, calibration or programming support.
Hardware, updates and the buying check
The manufacturer’s LR V3.0 page describes a standalone handheld, a 16-pin cable and PC-based updates, with lifetime free software upgrades advertised. Confirm current supply, update requirements and support before ordering.
Give the supplier the exact diesel engine identifier, build, market and task. Ask for complete PCM codes, available freeze context and the named exhaust/filter parameters required. Confirm ABS separately if needed. Compare the answer with an equipped specialist’s diagnostic report.
Compare a Jaguar-aware handheld, an enhanced multi-brand alternative and an equipped Jaguar specialist against the same task. An owner’s report from another scanner is not proof that LR V3.0 will produce the same result. Ask about current software, genuine supply, warranty and return terms. Check compatibility privately using the build details or VIN; registration year alone may be insufficient.

Is a vehicle-specific scanner worth the investment?
The best investment case is an owner who needs confirmed extra module access or useful manufacturer-context reporting repeatedly. Better evidence can help avoid treating a general filter warning as proof that an expensive part must be replaced.
If the only requirement is reading an emissions P-code, a generic reader may already meet it. For a one-off filter warning, a specialist able to interpret the results may offer better value than a tool whose required data remains unconfirmed.
Preserve a useful report before clearing anything
Save the reporting controller, complete code and suffix, current or stored status, available freeze-frame details and tool/software version. Record the exact warning, when it appeared, operating conditions, recent work and symptoms. Keep modules that did not communicate separate from modules that connected and reported no codes. Clearing removes evidence; it does not repair a fault.
Limits and professional help
An exhaust-filter warning requires the applicable handbook and appropriate professional assessment. Do not start a forced regeneration, work on hot exhaust components or use a code clear as a repair on the basis of this guide.
This is a guide to choosing a reading route. It gives no brake-release, roof override, air-suspension repair, forced-regeneration, key-programming or security-access instructions, and guarantees no coding, calibration, programming or active-test functions. A scan cannot certify mechanical health or safe operation.
