For a Defender Puma, the useful scanner is the one that reaches the fitted engine and ABS controllers, rather than the one advertising the most resets. GAP IIDTool G3 is a specialist candidate for regular ownership; iCarsoft LR V3.0 is a standalone alternative to check. Treat 2.4 and 2.2 coverage, and different ABS builds, as separate questions.
Which vehicles this guide covers
This guide covers original L316 Defender 90, 110 and 130 vehicles with the 2.4 or 2.2 four-cylinder TDCi diesel, commonly called Puma. Identify the engine and original build rather than relying on registration year. It excludes Tdi, Td5, petrol/V8 conversions, the newer L663 Defender and altered diagnostic electronics. Body length or trim does not establish which controllers or emissions equipment are fitted.
Land Rover’s Defender history records the major 2007 six-speed update and the replacement of the 2.4 with the 2.2 for 2012. Those milestones help define the article; they do not prove that every scanner entry labelled “Defender” covers both engines. Commercial/imported vehicles and later registrations deserve individual confirmation.
Choose coverage for the question you have
| Owner question | Information to seek | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Engine warning or reduced power | Correct Puma engine-controller codes and supported data | Do not substitute Td5 coverage or infer a failed component. |
| ABS or traction concern | Fitted ABS controller and the specific live values needed | An engine-only report cannot settle an ABS question. |
| Intermittent warning without stored engine codes | Other relevant controller reports and communication status | No generic engine codes is not an all-system health check. |
| Service or repair task | Written confirmation of the exact routine and prerequisites | Reading does not establish bleeding, coding or calibration. |

What generic OBD can still tell you
A compatible generic EOBD reader can retrieve supported emissions-related powertrain codes, readiness information, freeze-frame and standard live data. It can be useful for an engine warning, and some transmission-related powertrain codes may also be available. A successful generic connection does not establish access to the separate ABS, chassis, body or transmission controllers. Check whether the result came from the generic OBD menu or a manufacturer-specific vehicle selection.
For an early or commercial-specification Defender, confirm actual EOBD compliance and successful supported access rather than assuming a US “1996 onwards” claim applies to every UK vehicle.
An ABS question can require more than fault codes
In a Defender 2.2 owner discussion, an owner describes occasional low-speed ABS pump operation without dashboard warnings and asks which diagnostic program is needed. The thread contains differing explanations of ABS changeovers and suggested repairs. It is useful evidence of the reader’s question, not a verified diagnosis or a reliable build-by-build specification.
For that question, ask the tool supplier specifically whether the fitted ABS controller can be identified and whether the required wheel-speed or other live data is available. A generic claim to read “ABS” is weaker than confirmation for this vehicle and reading task. A zero value while stationary does not by itself diagnose a sensor. This article supplies no road-test, brake-test or sensor-adjustment procedure.
What the manufacturer coverage evidence establishes
GAP’s Defender selection, reviewed at 2012, lists separate Puma 2.2 and 2.4 engine rows, ABS and the instrument pack. That supports investigating the appropriate controller route; the combined catalogue is not a statement that both engines are fitted. Its hardware table lists G3 for the classic Defender, with a different position for G4, so a newer hardware number is not an automatic upgrade.
The iCarsoft lookup showed engine, ABS and instrument-pack entries for the 2007–2010 2.4 selection. Its later Defender year group was labelled 2012–2015 / 2.4 even though JLR documents the 2.2 change. That mismatch means the later label cannot establish exact 2.2 support. Obtain confirmation by build and controller rather than transferring the early 2.4 result.
Scanner options worth checking
| Route | Best fit | Check before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| iCarsoft LR V3.0 | Standalone handheld reading | Exact engine, build, controller, function and current software. |
| GAP IIDTool BT | Specialist Land Rover ownership route | Correct G3/G4 hardware, exact coverage, device and licence conditions. |
| Generic EOBD reader | Supported engine/emissions questions | Actual compliance and supported access; no assumption of all-system coverage. |
| Properly equipped specialist | One-off complex faults or communication problems | A saved relevant-controller report and a documented diagnosis. |
For a standalone handheld, iCarsoft LR V3.0 is the main candidate to check. Its manufacturer documentation describes a button-operated display, PC/card-reader updating and free software updates. The vehicle/function lookup is more useful than a reset count: select LR V3.0, LANDROVER, the model, year group and engine, then inspect the required controller and reading function. Catalogue entries can include equipment or powertrains that your car does not have. Obtain current confirmation for the actual build and task before ordering.
Start with the reading task: an occasional engine/emissions enquiry may need less equipment than repeated manufacturer-aware engine and ABS investigation. For a 2.2, make confirmation of the actual engine and ABS entries a condition of purchase. Do not pay extra for advertised DPF, injector, ABS-bleeding or calibration menus without a separately supported need. A specialist report can be better value for a single unresolved fault.
Phone, computer, updates and licences
GAP IIDTool BT uses a compatible iOS or Android device; check the current app, Bluetooth and operating-system requirements before buying. Firmware updating is separate from connecting at the car. GAP’s licence policy separates supported fault reading and live values from advanced VIN-licensed functions. A BT package includes a VIN licence for relevant advanced work; do not describe all reading as locked to one car. Check ownership transfer and included hardware when considering a used unit. For iCarsoft, confirm genuine hardware, the serial-specific updater, supported computer and included card reader or cable.

Save a useful first report
Save the original report before clearing anything. Record the private VIN/build identification, engine, gearbox, fitted equipment, exact warning wording, symptoms, recent repairs and tool/software version. Keep the controller name, full code including suffix, status, description and any available freeze-frame or live-data context. Distinguish a controller reporting no faults from one that did not communicate, and identify systems the tool did not access. A code is evidence for investigation, rather than a parts order; clearing it does not repair the cause.
Limits of a scan and when specialist help matters
Reading faults, clearing faults, viewing data, running a service routine, commanding an active test and programming a module are different capabilities. This guide guarantees none of the latter functions. It contains no immobiliser, key-programming, security-access, brake-repair, suspension-calibration or forced-regeneration instructions. Symptoms affecting braking, steering, suspension or drive control need appropriate professional assessment. A scanner cannot certify mechanical engine or gearbox condition.
Frequently asked questions
Will a Td5 diagnostic recommendation cover a Puma?
No. Confirm the original 2.4 or 2.2 engine and the fitted controller; shared Defender bodywork is insufficient.
Does ABS code reading guarantee wheel-speed data?
No. Confirm the particular live-data function for the ABS unit and build.
Should I buy G4 instead of G3?
Use GAP’s current exact-vehicle hardware guidance. The reviewed table lists G3 for the classic Defender; do not choose solely by generation number.
