For an early petrol SLK R172, choose a reader for the actual fault and fitted controller. An engine warning, a roof that ignores its switch and a MAGIC SKY CONTROL problem need different information. A basic reader can be enough for an emissions question; a roof complaint needs separately confirmed Mercedes-specific access.
Which SLK R172 models does this guide cover?
This guide covers the early UK petrol range introduced in 2011: the 1.8-litre SLK 200 and SLK 250, plus the 3.5-litre SLK 350. It deliberately stops at the later engine revision rather than treating every R172 as one specification. The UK model chronology distinguishes this original SLK range; the archived manufacturer brochure supplies the early capacities and equipment.
| Version | Engine branch | Gearbox enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| SLK 200, early | M271 1,796cc turbocharged petrol | Six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic; identify actual car. |
| SLK 250 petrol, early | M271 1,796cc turbocharged petrol | UK automatic specification: 7G-TRONIC PLUS. |
| SLK 350 | M276 3,498cc petrol V6 | 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven-speed automatic. |
These four-cylinder engines are turbocharged; they are not the earlier R171 SLK 200 Kompressor. The Mercedes-Benz club model/engine reference helps separate the families. The UK chronology identifies the SLK 200 as the manual choice. Brochures and tool lists can combine market specifications, so establish the gearbox from the actual vehicle.
The working period is 2011 to the 2015 engine update, but engine identity controls this guide. Later 1,991cc SLK 200/SLK 300 and nine-speed cars need a separate scope. All SLC-badged versions, diesels, SLK 55 AMG, imports and materially modified systems are excluded. A 2015 registration does not establish which engine or transmission is fitted, and SLK-to-SLC naming is not a reliable substitute for that check.
What R172 owners actually ask
A 2012 SLK 250 owner discussion describes intermittent roof operation followed by no response, including after a battery replacement. The owner also asks about roof functions on an iCarsoft V3. That is a useful purchasing question: does the tool read the roof controller and provide the needed status information? It is not evidence that a battery, switch, hydraulic unit or controller is the cause.
A supported reading task and a menu for operating components are separate matters. This guide assesses codes and information; it does not promise a roof actuation function or describe dismantling, bypassing interlocks or moving the mechanism manually.

Roof, gearbox, ESP and suspension: what is documented?
| Reading task | Separate documentary evidence | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Vario roof | V2 and V3 references identify VDS/N52 with code and data columns marked supported | Reference evidence; confirm current hardware/software and the required status item. |
| MAGIC SKY CONTROL | MSC/N53 has a separate entry in both references | Optional glass equipment; not proof of roof-mechanism diagnosis. |
| Transmission / ABS-ESP | Named transmission and ESP entries appear separately | Identify actual gearbox and controller; not inferred from engine communication. |
| Body electronics | SAM and door-controller entries | Confirm the affected front/rear or door module. |
| Suspension | V3 lists ADS/N51/5 | Only relevant if adaptive damping is actually fitted. |
The V2 V01.05 diagnostic table and V3 reference table were reviewed separately. Their broad ALL labels are not exact current-build certificates. AIRSCARF also appears separately; its presence does not establish access to every roof status or an unrelated comfort complaint.
The manufacturer brochure separates ordinary suspension, sports suspension and the Dynamic Handling option with electronically adaptive damping. A stiffer or lower car does not automatically have an ADS controller. This is not an AIRMATIC or ABC buying case. Ask the supplier to identify the fitted damper controller before paying for suspension reading.
For the roof, request controller identity, complete faults and the particular available input/status data needed by the person investigating it. A list saying live data is supported does not establish every switch value. A clear report can guide the next assessment without proving that the mechanism is mechanically sound.
What can a basic OBD2 reader tell you?
On a compatible car, generic EOBD/OBD2 can provide supported emissions-related codes, readiness information, freeze-frame and engine data. Some transmission-related codes may appear through that route. It does not amount to a complete transmission, ABS/ESP, body or convertible-roof report.
A compatible basic reader is a sensible choice for an isolated engine-emissions question. Pay for manufacturer-aware reading when the required controller or information lies outside that task.
Enhanced reading may add controller identification, its own fault descriptions/status and supported data. Record modules that could not communicate as well as those returning faults. “No faults”, “not fitted” and “cannot communicate” are different findings; none independently diagnoses an intermittent or mechanical problem.
Which scanner or scan is worth paying for?
| Route | When it can make sense | Confirm before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible basic reader | Engine-emissions question only | Protocol and required reading functions. |
| LAUNCH Creader Elite for Mercedes | Repeated Mercedes controller reading | Exact generation, supplied Mercedes software and named module. |
| iCarsoft MB V2.0 / V3.0 | Repeated marque-specific reading | Separate current product evidence, software and interface. |
| LAUNCH CRP129 EVO V3 | Engine, transmission, ABS and SRS enquiries | Four-system scope; no roof/body/ADS inference. |
| LAUNCH CRP919S / Autel MD906 Pro | Several vehicles justify broader coverage | Exact controller, UK support and total setup/update cost. |
| Mercedes specialist report | One-off problem or unconfirmed access | Appropriate legitimate equipment and a written reading scope. |
The current LAUNCH Creader manufacturer page describes Mercedes-specific configurations and combines 2.0/3.0 products. An earlier regional Creader page describes a different generation. Confirm the actual unit, included brand licence and update arrangement. A marketplace title, family name or X431 branding does not establish identical coverage.
A Mercedes-specific LAUNCH reader is a credible candidate to investigate. Ask for the supplied hardware/software version, required controller reading, delivered UK price, return terms and any additional-brand charges. No purchase link or owner’s possession of a tool establishes its exact capabilities.
The iCarsoft V2 and V3 product pages describe standalone handhelds and free software updates. Obtain a current UK quote including required cables or adapters. A model listing and a reference PDF do not guarantee the present reading task; the two products need separate confirmation.
The official UK CRP129 EVO V3 page listed £346.80 including VAT with lifetime Wi-Fi updates on review. Its four-system scope can be useful after confirmation, but is not evidence for roof, body or suspension reading. The UK CRP919S page listed £514.80 including VAT with 24 months of updates. Ask what renewal costs and what remains usable afterwards.
Autel’s MD906 Pro documentation offers another reputable multi-system candidate and describes lifetime software updates for that product. Confirm the UK package, support, exact vehicle/controller and complete interface. Compare the delivered setup and future costs with a specialist’s report and interpretation. For one unresolved fault, the report may cost less and answer more.
What about legitimate Mercedes diagnostics?
Ask a Mercedes specialist which legitimately licensed equipment suits the chassis and required reading. Request controller identity, complete codes/status, relevant data and a list of modules that could not be read. A quotation for a “STAR scan” should state what information it includes.
The XENTRY Diagnosis Lite manual describes a commercial Windows setup, supplied hardware, 16-pin cable, contract, StartKey and time credits; the UK appears among eligible markets. Current eligibility, chassis support and total hardware/software/time-credit costs need confirming. A supplied cable does not prove a different legacy connection.
The XENTRY Pass Thru EU FAQ limits eligibility to qualifying Euro 5/VI vehicles. Check the actual vehicle’s emissions certification and current eligibility; do not assume that every car in this guide qualifies. Also confirm the interface and required controller. Fitting within an eligible emissions class is not an exact-function guarantee. Copied-software bundles are not the legitimate alternative. For occasional use, a professional reading often avoids a disproportionate setup.

What to ask before buying or booking
Provide build date, engine, gearbox, body style, original market and fitted equipment. Where necessary, supply a VIN privately to a reputable supplier. Name the task: controller identity, full codes and status, and the particular data item needed. Obtain confirmation for the current unit, interface and database, plus return terms if the agreed reading is unavailable.
For brake, restraint, roof or suspension warnings, follow the handbook and obtain appropriate professional assessment. This guide provides no safety-critical repair, coding, programming, calibration, active-test, key or security-access procedure. An available menu does not establish that using it is safe or appropriate.
Common scanner questions
Does a more expensive tool guarantee a diagnosis?
No. It may obtain more information from supported controllers. Interpretation and electrical or mechanical investigation may still be necessary. A code is not an instruction to replace the named component.
Can I clear the warning and see whether it returns?
Preserve the original report and relevant operating circumstances first. Clearing can remove useful evidence and does not repair the cause. Do not use a cleared warning as reassurance about a safety-related system.
Is a service reminder the same as a diagnostic fault?
No. Maintenance reminders and fault information answer different questions. See the ASSYST explanation for wider context and use the maintenance system applicable to the actual build. This guide is not a reset procedure.
