For a first-generation CLK, establish the diagnostic connection before choosing a scanner. A generic emissions reader, a Mercedes-aware handheld and a specialist’s complete legacy setup can answer different questions. Cabriolet roof and central-locking enquiries also need more precise evidence than a broad W208 listing.
Which CLK C208 and A208 models are covered?
W208 is common shorthand, but C208 identifies the coupé and A208 the fabric-roof cabriolet. The UK chronology places the coupé in 1997–2002 and cabriolet in 1998–2003. Their replacements arrived at different times, so a 2003 registration alone does not identify an A208 or A209.
| Selected model | Engine | Transmission branch |
|---|---|---|
| CLK 200 Kompressor, from 2000 | M111 2.0 supercharged | Six-speed manual or five-speed automatic; confirm actual fitment. |
| CLK 230 Kompressor | M111 2.3 supercharged, original and 2000 revision | Earlier five-speed manual versus later six-speed; five-speed automatic alternative. |
| CLK 320 | M112 3.2 V6 petrol | Five-speed automatic in this scope. |
| CLK 430 | M113 4.3 V8 petrol | Five-speed automatic in this scope. |
Mercedes’ 1999–2002 history distinguishes the 1999 facelift from the June 2000 four-cylinder engine/manual-transmission changes. The CLK 200 Kompressor technical archive confirms its 2.0-litre supercharged engine. It must not be confused with the later 1.8-litre CLK 200 Kompressor. The cabriolet archive separately establishes the A208 branch.
Naturally aspirated CLK 200, AMG, CLK GTR, C209/A209, imports and materially modified systems are excluded. The 1999 update brought ESP as standard in the manufacturer history; earlier equipment must be checked on the car. Do not treat every 1999 registration as facelift specification.
What CLK owners actually ask
A W208 cabriolet roof discussion describes a tool returning B1650 without the useful subcode the owner wanted. This illustrates why “reads Mercedes codes” can be an incomplete buying specification. Ask whether the full controller-specific fault, suffix and status can be retrieved on the actual car. The discussion does not establish the cause or validate a repair.
A roof that stops part-way, a gearbox complaint and a locking problem should be quoted as separate reading tasks. Save the original report before clearing anything. A shorter generic code description can lose information that matters to a specialist.

First check the complete connection route
Identify the original UK build, the available diagnostic connector and the controller required. Do not assume a 16-pin engine connection provides complete non-engine access, or that a simple round 38-pin adapter turns any OBD2 reader into a Mercedes scanner. Ask for a supported combination of tool, interface, cable and present software for this particular car. Socket terminology in overseas discussions is not a UK fitment certificate.
Earlier cars in this generation also precede universal petrol EOBD expectations. Confirm protocol compatibility even for engine-only reading. If the supplier cannot establish the complete route, a specialist with appropriate older-Mercedes equipment is the more defensible purchase.
What do the controller references establish?
| System | V3 reference finding | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| Transmission / brakes | TCM, ESP and BAS separately named | Actual gearbox and fitted brake/stability equipment still need confirmation. |
| Cabriolet roof | A combined VR/rollover-bar entry marks codes/data | Confirm A208 fabric-top applicability, complete subcodes and required status values. |
| Central locking / doors | PSE and front door entries mark code reading but no live data | Do not promise live locking or door-input values from this reference. |
| Body | SAM and panel-controller entries | Match the affected controller; engine access is insufficient. |
| Suspension | No supported adaptive-suspension purchase case established here | Do not transfer SL/CL ABC or later AIRMATIC claims. |
The V3 document labels its roof grouping “Vario Roof/rollover Bar”. That vendor wording does not make the A208 a folding-metal-roof car, nor does it establish a particular subcode or operating function. It is a reason to ask a precise coverage question.
The V2 V01.05 document includes CLK 208 in its reset-function section. In the reviewed diagnostic section, separate CLK 208 reading rows were not established. Reset entries therefore cannot certify V2 roof, transmission or body reading, and V3 evidence must not be transferred to a V2 listing. This is a documentation limit, not a claim that every current V2 installation cannot communicate.
What can a basic OBD2 reader tell you?
On a compatible car, generic EOBD/OBD2 can provide supported emissions-related codes, readiness information, freeze-frame and engine data. Some transmission-related codes may appear through that route. It does not amount to a complete transmission, ABS/ESP, body or convertible-roof report.
For this older CLK, confirm actual market, build, protocol and connector before buying even a basic reader. Later registration and a plug that fits do not guarantee EOBD compatibility.
Enhanced reading may add controller identification, its own fault descriptions/status and supported data. Record modules that could not communicate as well as those returning faults. “No faults”, “not fitted” and “cannot communicate” are different findings; none independently diagnoses an intermittent or mechanical problem.
Which scanner or scan is worth paying for?
| Route | When it can make sense | Confirm before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible basic reader | Engine-emissions question only | Protocol and required reading functions. |
| LAUNCH Creader Elite for Mercedes | Repeated Mercedes controller reading | Exact generation, supplied Mercedes software and named module. |
| iCarsoft MB V2.0 / V3.0 | Repeated marque-specific reading | Separate current product evidence, software and interface. |
| LAUNCH CRP129 EVO V3 | Engine, transmission, ABS and SRS enquiries | Four-system scope; no roof/body/ADS inference. |
| LAUNCH CRP919S / Autel MD906 Pro | Several vehicles justify broader coverage | Exact controller, UK support and total setup/update cost. |
| Mercedes specialist report | One-off problem or unconfirmed access | Appropriate legitimate equipment and a written reading scope. |
The current LAUNCH Creader manufacturer page describes Mercedes-specific configurations and combines 2.0/3.0 products. An earlier regional Creader page describes a different generation. Confirm the actual unit, included brand licence and update arrangement. A marketplace title, family name or X431 branding does not establish identical coverage.
A Mercedes-specific LAUNCH reader is a credible candidate to investigate. Ask for the supplied hardware/software version, required controller reading, delivered UK price, return terms and any additional-brand charges. No purchase link or owner’s possession of a tool establishes its exact capabilities.
The iCarsoft V2 and V3 product pages describe standalone handhelds and free software updates. Obtain a current UK quote including required cables or adapters. A model listing and a reference PDF do not guarantee the present reading task; the two products need separate confirmation.
The official UK CRP129 EVO V3 page listed £346.80 including VAT with lifetime Wi-Fi updates on review. Its four-system scope can be useful after confirmation, but is not evidence for roof, body or suspension reading. The UK CRP919S page listed £514.80 including VAT with 24 months of updates. Ask what renewal costs and what remains usable afterwards.
Autel’s MD906 Pro documentation offers another reputable multi-system candidate and describes lifetime software updates for that product. Confirm the UK package, support, exact vehicle/controller and complete interface. Compare the delivered setup and future costs with a specialist’s report and interpretation. For one unresolved fault, the report may cost less and answer more.
What about legitimate Mercedes diagnostics?
Ask a Mercedes specialist which legitimately licensed equipment suits the chassis and required reading. Request controller identity, complete codes/status, relevant data and a list of modules that could not be read. A quotation for a “STAR scan” should state what information it includes.
The XENTRY Diagnosis Lite manual describes a commercial Windows setup, supplied hardware, 16-pin cable, contract, StartKey and time credits; the UK appears among eligible markets. Current eligibility, chassis support and total hardware/software/time-credit costs need confirming. A supplied cable does not prove a different legacy connection.
The XENTRY Pass Thru EU FAQ limits eligibility to qualifying Euro 5/VI vehicles. Do not buy it for a CLK 208 on the assumption that an OBD connector or included DAS removes that restriction. Copied-software bundles are not the legitimate alternative. For occasional use, a professional reading often avoids a disproportionate setup.

What to ask before buying or booking
Provide build date, engine, gearbox, body style, original market and fitted equipment. Where necessary, supply a VIN privately to a reputable supplier. Name the task: controller identity, full codes and status, and the particular data item needed. Obtain confirmation for the current unit, interface and database, plus return terms if the agreed reading is unavailable.
For brake, restraint, roof or suspension warnings, follow the handbook and obtain appropriate professional assessment. This guide provides no safety-critical repair, coding, programming, calibration, active-test, key or security-access procedure. An available menu does not establish that using it is safe or appropriate.
Common scanner questions
Does a more expensive tool guarantee a diagnosis?
No. It may obtain more information from supported controllers. Interpretation and electrical or mechanical investigation may still be necessary. A code is not an instruction to replace the named component.
Can I clear the warning and see whether it returns?
Preserve the original report and relevant operating circumstances first. Clearing can remove useful evidence and does not repair the cause. Do not use a cleared warning as reassurance about a safety-related system.
Is a service reminder the same as a diagnostic fault?
No. Maintenance reminders and fault information answer different questions. See the ASSYST explanation for wider context and use the maintenance system applicable to the actual build. This guide is not a reset procedure.
More Mercedes reading
Browse the Mercedes-Benz diagnostic guides and main diagnostic directory. For a separate related scope, see the CLK C209/A209 guide. The Mercedes model/history hub provides wider reading. Related models do not share automatic scanner compatibility.
