For a late R129, establish the connection and the named controller before buying a scanner. A generic engine connection does not establish roof, gearbox, stability or body access. With an occasional soft-top complaint, an appropriately equipped older-Mercedes specialist may be a better first purchase than a handheld plus an unverified adapter.
Which SL R129 does this guide cover?
This is deliberately a late-car guide: UK original-specification SL 320 V6 and SL 500 M113 from the 1998 revision through the end of R129 production in 2001. Mercedes’ final-series history identifies the engine change and the end of production. RAC’s UK review uses a wider 1989–2002 sales-generation range. A later registration needs a chassis/build check.
| Included version | Engine identity | Transmission |
|---|---|---|
| SL 320, 1998 revision–2001 | M112 3.2-litre V6 | Five-speed automatic. |
| SL 500, 1998 revision–2001 | M113 5.0-litre V8 | Five-speed automatic. |
The SL 320 technical archive and SL 500 technical archive document these engines and gearboxes. Earlier SL 320 cars have a different six-cylinder engine, while earlier SL 500/500 SL cars use M119 variants. They require separate research and are excluded, along with SL 280/600, AMG, R107/R230, imports and modified control systems.
The 1998 revision is not the same as a diagnostic document’s August/September 1999 split. Mercedes records ESP becoming standard on the six-cylinder models in August 1999. Do not assume an earlier SL 320 has every later stability component because a broad tool list includes ESP. Identify the actual brake/stability specification.
Why the diagnostic connection comes first
A 2000 SL 500 owner asks about a 38-pin adapter and a possible 16-pin socket. The discussion is from outside the UK and even the replies vary in connector terminology. It is useful evidence of owner confusion, not a UK socket-location or coverage certificate. A US-market OBD2 video cannot establish the UK car’s communication route.
Inspect the actual connection and ask a supplier or specialist to confirm the complete tool/interface/adapter combination. A cable that changes connector shape does not establish the required module communication. This guide supplies no pin rewiring, homemade adapter or emergency roof-operation instructions.

Roof, transmission, brakes, body and suspension reading
| Required controller | Reference evidence | Boundary to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Soft top | RS–Roadster Soft Top in both V3 R129 date branches | Roof data is a reading enquiry, not an operating or repair guarantee. |
| Automatic gearbox | TCM entry | Confirm actual five-speed installation and communication route. |
| Brakes/stability | ESP and BAS entries | Actual fitted ABS/ASR/ESP specification must be established; no universal early-car ESP claim. |
| Locking/body | RFL central-locking and other body entries | RFL codes are listed without live data; roof data cannot be transferred to it. |
| Suspension | ADS entry in the up-to-August 1999 branch | Code reading indicated there, without live data; later ADS support not established by that row. |
| Engine | Named engine-controller entries differ by date branch | A broad engine menu is not identification of this exact M112/M113 ECU. |
The V3 reference document explicitly distinguishes supported and unsupported columns. Its early ADS and locking entries lack live-data support, while the roof entry has a data mark. The later branch does not supply the same ADS row. These are reference-only findings; current tool, connection and exact-build confirmation remain necessary.
The R129 rows near the end of the V2 V01.05 document are in a reset-function table. They must not be used as proof either for or against a particular code-reading task. Nor should V3 roof evidence be transferred to a V2 sale. Ask for the actual current reading result, with the hardware and adapter specified.
Mercedes’ technical archives describe optional hydropneumatic level control. Identify the car’s real suspension and any conversion before asking about ADS. This is not AIRMATIC or the later SL’s ABC. The presence of a suspension option does not itself prove what a handheld can read. A spring or hydraulic defect may still require physical assessment even if electronic faults are absent.
What can a basic OBD2 reader tell you?
On a compatible car, generic EOBD/OBD2 may supply supported emissions-related trouble codes, readiness information, freeze-frame and engine data. Some transmission-related codes can appear through that route. It is still not a complete gearbox, brake, roof or body-controller report.
For this older R129, neither a 16-pin connection nor a later registration guarantees generic EOBD compatibility. Establish the actual market/build and supported protocol first. Buying a generic reader plus a round adapter is not a supported non-engine recommendation.
Manufacturer-aware reading can add controller identity, its own fault descriptions/status and supported data. Save the complete report before clearing anything, including which modules did not communicate. A successful scan cannot certify mechanical condition or prove that an intermittent problem has disappeared.
Which diagnostic route is worth paying for?
| Route | Useful buying case | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible basic reader | Engine-emissions information only | Actual protocol and required reading functions. |
| LAUNCH Creader Elite for Mercedes | Repeated Mercedes-specific controller reading | Exact generation/BN package, original versus 2.0/3.0, actual build and named module. |
| iCarsoft MB V2.0 or V3.0 | Repeated marque-focused reading | Separate product evidence, current database and complete connection package. |
| LAUNCH CRP129 EVO V3 | Engine, transmission, ABS and SRS tasks | Four-system scope; not a roof/body/suspension purchase case. |
| LAUNCH CRP919S / Autel MD906 Pro | Several vehicles need enhanced reading | Exact controller coverage, UK support and total update/setup cost. |
| Older-Mercedes specialist | One-off fault or uncertain legacy communication | Legitimate equipment appropriate to this chassis and a written report. |
The LAUNCH Creader Elite manufacturer page describes Mercedes-specific configurations and reading functions. Its current page combines 2.0 and 3.0 products. The earlier regional Creader Elite page is a different generation. Do not assume an Amazon title, a shared family name or the appearance of an X431 logo identifies identical hardware or software.
The Mercedes-specific Creader is a credible candidate to investigate alongside other tools. Request the supplied brand licence, current software version, exact controller reading, delivered UK price, return terms and update entitlement. Additional brands can cost extra. An owner report is useful context, but it is not independent verification of coverage.
The iCarsoft V2 and V3 product pages describe standalone handhelds with free software updates. Confirm UK price, any adapter and the required update arrangement. Their model lists do not replace exact controller evidence. A V3 reference finding is not a promise for V2 or every current revision.
The official UK CRP129 EVO V3 page listed £346.80 including VAT and lifetime Wi-Fi updates when reviewed. Its four-system scope is relevant to those four reading tasks after confirmation. It is not a roof, body or suspension recommendation.
The official UK CRP919S page listed £514.80 including VAT and 24 months of updates. Autel’s MD906 Pro documentation provides another candidate. Ask about renewal charges, what remains usable afterwards, genuine UK support and the exact older-car interface. No exact module support is inferred from a full-system label.
Compare the complete delivered setup with the price of a specialist report and interpretation. For one car and one unresolved fault, the workshop may be cheaper. Repeated reading across several cars can change the calculation. Paying for unsupported functions is not better value than a smaller tool that answers the actual question.
The legitimate Mercedes diagnostic route
An older-Mercedes specialist should be able to explain which legitimately licensed equipment suits the chassis, connection and task. Ask for controller identification, complete codes/status and the relevant data, plus a list of modules that could not be read. “STAR scan” without a scope is an incomplete quotation.
The XENTRY Diagnosis Lite manual describes a commercial Windows setup with supplied hardware, a 16-pin cable, contract, StartKey and time credits. The UK is an eligible market in that document. Current eligibility, full costs and exact older-chassis support still require confirmation; the listed cable does not establish round-connector access.
The official XENTRY Pass Thru EU FAQ limits that offer to eligible Euro 5/VI vehicles. Having an OBD socket, or seeing DAS included, does not remove that restriction. Do not buy it for these older petrol cars on a connector-only assumption, and do not use copied-software bundles as the legitimate alternative.

What to ask before buying or booking
Supply the original build date, engine, gearbox, body style, actual connection and fitted equipment. Give a VIN privately to a reputable supplier if necessary. Name the reading task: module identity, complete codes/status and the particular data item. Ask for confirmation for the present hardware, interface and database, plus return terms if the promised task is unavailable.
For brake, restraint, roof or suspension warnings, follow the vehicle handbook and obtain appropriate professional assessment. This guide supplies no safety-critical repair, coding, programming, calibration, active-test, key or security-access procedure. A menu entry does not establish that carrying out a function is appropriate or safe.
SL R129 1998–2001 scanner questions
Does a more expensive scanner guarantee a diagnosis?
No. It may retrieve more information from supported controllers. The report still needs interpretation, and electrical or mechanical investigation may remain necessary. A code is not a replacement-parts instruction.
What if the tool says no faults or cannot communicate?
Record the exact message and module. No stored faults, not fitted and communication failure mean different things. Do not infer that the car is healthy or that a module has failed from that message alone. Compare with an appropriate specialist report when the result does not answer the complaint.
Is a service reminder the same as a fault code?
No. Maintenance reminders, maintenance-data access and diagnostic faults answer different questions. The site’s ASSYST explanation gives wider context; use the handbook and maintenance system applicable to this build. This is not a reset procedure.
