Mercedes C220 CDI W204 Service & Maintenance Guide (OM651)

For the W204 C220 CDI with the OM651.911 engine, start a service plan with the ASSYST reminder, the Service Booklet and the last itemised invoice. The useful buying references are MB-Approval 229.51 engine oil, MANN HU 7010 z oil filter and C 35 003 engine air filter for the applications described below. Additional work depends on the car and its recorded maintenance, rather than a fixed shopping list attached to a B suffix.

This guide focuses on the 125 kW/170 hp OM651 C220 CDI saloon, with diesel particulate filter, and uses the non-4MATIC OM651.911 branch for its air-filter advice. Early OM646 cars and OM651.912/4MATIC applications need different checks. Estate and coupé catalogue entries do not automatically establish their fluid quantities.

Identify your C220 CDI before buying parts

The C220 CDI name covers more than one engine. MANN’s catalogue separates the earlier OM646.811 application from the later OM651.911/912 group. Both are listed at 125 kW/170 hp, so power output alone does not identify the right filter.

Oil and filters: the practical starting points

The 2013 saloon manual gives 6.5 litres including the oil filter through its “all other models” capacity row. This is an oil-change reference for the covered C220 CDI, not a top-up instruction. Its DPF-diesel approval table supports MB 229.51 for the selected application. Read the W204 C220 CDI oil approval and capacity guide before choosing oil or quantities.

For OM651.911, MANN lists HU 7010 z for oil filtration and C 35 003 for engine air filtration. Its OM651.912/4MATIC branch lists C 35 005 instead. Our oil and air filter guide explains those differences before any purchase.

For a right-hand-drive car, the biofunctional cabin-filter reference is FP 29 005/1; MANN also lists the activated-carbon CUK 29 005 in this model family. The W204 cabin-filter guide explains the steering-side distinction and the complete part numbers.

Turn an A or B reminder into an itemised job

  1. Record the displayed service message and mileage before the appointment.
  2. Compare the last invoice with the Service Booklet, especially entries recorded separately from the basic service.
  3. Ask the quote to separate the base service, additional due items, investigation of faults and discretionary repairs.
  4. Record the oil approval and filter references actually fitted on the final invoice.

Mercedes describes A as the smaller service and B as the larger service in the inspected manual, with the detailed scope and intervals in the Service Booklet. Our W204 ASSYST PLUS guide covers the display. A suffix can indicate extra work, but it cannot identify every filter or consumable from the dashboard alone.

What about short journeys and a missing history?

The manual says arduous use can require more frequent servicing, including engine oil, the oil filter and the air filter. Its examples include frequent short journeys, stop-start driving and long periods of idling. It does not supply a single shortened interval for every car.

If history is incomplete, ask for an inspection and a written catch-up plan. Prioritise documented overdue items and the car’s condition. Replacing every possible filter solely because the dashboard says B5 can add cost while still overlooking a due task.

Supplying your own parts

Confirm that the workshop accepts customer-supplied parts before ordering, and agree what its quote includes. Use the linked buying guides for the verified references. A generic “W204 service kit” can hide engine, fuel-system or gearbox differences; the individual contents need matching.

Sources and application notes

Sources checked 16 October 2026. The online Mercedes manual is the English 2013 saloon edition, part 2045843283Z102, supplied on a country-specific Mercedes website. Match its coverage to your vehicle’s own manual and Service Booklet. Catalogue dates describe parts applications, not service intervals.

Browse the Mercedes servicing and maintenance hub or our Mercedes diagnostic scanner guides. A scanner’s capabilities need checking against the car and the task; fault reading does not establish the maintenance due.
