A 2010 Grand Modus Automatic is illustrated; its engine specification is unverified.
For a Modus or Grand Modus 1.6 automatic with a gearbox warning, prioritise confirmed transmission-controller reading. A compatible basic OBD2 reader can retrieve supported engine-emissions information, including some drivetrain-related codes. That is not the same as identifying and reading the actual automatic gearbox controller.
A Renault-aware handheld such as the FR V2.0 is worth checking for repeated use. If you only need one investigation, price a suitable Renault specialist’s report as well. The buying question is whether the tool can obtain the relevant information from your exact automatic, rather than whether it advertises a large number of reset functions.
Which Modus automatic is covered?
UK-market right-hand-drive Modus and Grand Modus 1.6 VVT petrol automatic, from the X77 generation. Identify original build, phase, short or Grand body and actual transmission. The 2011 UK range is a documented specification snapshot, not proof that every earlier or later trim is identical. Excludes 1.2 petrol/TCe, diesels, manual and Quickshift automated-manual variants, imports and materially modified control systems.
The October 2011 Renault UK price guide lists the 1.6 VVT 111 Automatic for both Modus and Grand Modus. The Phase 2 driver’s handbook treats the automatic gearbox and Quickshift in separate sections. A handbook covering both does not make them interchangeable transmission applications.
| Question | Useful report | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Gearbox warning or unexpected shift | Actual transmission-controller codes and status | Correct 1.6 automatic, build and database. |
| Engine-emissions warning | Compatible generic EOBD | Supported engine information only. |
| ABS or airbag warning | Confirmed ABS/restraint access | Separate from an engine or gearbox scan. |
| Body or steering-assistance concern | Actual fitted controller reading | Equipment and exact function vary by build. |
A warning after a shift: preserve the circumstances
A 2019 UK owner-forum question described a neighbour’s 2008 Modus 1.6 automatic changing from fourth to third and displaying a warning. Switching off and restarting reportedly restored normal operation temporarily. The discussion supplied no diagnostic codes or verified final repair.
The reported pattern is a useful reason to request an automatic-transmission report. It does not identify a solenoid, valve body, fluid issue or electrical cause. Suggestions in the replies are unverified possibilities, not a maintenance schedule or a repair instruction for another car.
What to ask a gearbox scan to tell you
Ask whether the reader can identify the actual transmission controller and retrieve its full codes, descriptions and available status. If a particular data item is needed, such as a reported operating state, request confirmation of that item on this build rather than relying on a general “live data” label.
Record the dashboard wording, selected gear, when the event occurred, cold or warm conditions and relevant recent work. Keep the original report before clearing. A restart that changes the behaviour does not establish the cause, and an absent warning at a later visit does not invalidate the earlier symptom.
If the engine and gearbox both report faults, preserve both reports. Do not assume the first code displayed is the root cause or that every warning represents a separate failed component. Electronic evidence may need to be combined with mechanical or electrical checks by an appropriately equipped technician.
Why an engine-only result can leave the gearbox question open
Generic EOBD is useful for supported emissions-related information. Some transmission-related conditions can appear there, so it would be too broad to say every basic reader is incapable of showing a gearbox-related code. The limit is that a generic engine result does not establish a complete report from the separate transmission controller.
Record which menu was used and which systems communicated. “No codes” in the engine menu, “no faults” from the supported transmission controller and “unable to communicate” are different findings. A scanner cannot certify the internal mechanical condition of an automatic gearbox from any of them.
What the iCarsoft Modus reference supports
The FR V2 Renault reference lists a Modus transmission control module, as well as injection, ABS, airbags, instruments, UCH and variable power assistance. Its diagnostic columns concern ECU information, codes and live data. These entries justify a focused current coverage enquiry; they do not establish every Grand Modus build or every gearbox parameter.
Identify the actual body and transmission when asking the supplier. Do not let a broad Modus entry substitute for confirmation of your Grand Modus automatic. Reading and clearing are also distinct from adaptations, software programming, fluid-related counters or component commands; none of those additional tasks is guaranteed here.
Equipment varies beyond the gearbox
The UK price guide is also a useful reminder to check fitted equipment. Its Modus/Grand Modus options include electronic stability control on specified versions. An ABS menu does not establish that every car has identical stability functions, tyre-pressure equipment or parking assistance.
For a body, restraint or steering warning, name the actual system and required reading task. A code in one controller does not establish a physical repair, and a clean scan cannot certify braking or restraint safety. Follow the car’s warning guidance and have an unresolved safety-system concern assessed appropriately.
A practical shortlist
| Option | Useful role | Setup or cost question |
|---|---|---|
| Generic EOBD handheld | Supported engine-emissions codes and data | Does it meet the actual limited task? |
| Renault-aware FR V2.0 | Repeated confirmed transmission/ABS/body reading | Exact automatic coverage and update computer. |
| Enhanced multibrand reader | Several cars need supported enhanced access | Exact model, version, coverage and update terms. |
| Renault specialist / suitable CLIP | An occasional or unresolved gearbox report | Appropriate X77 equipment and actual task capability. |
The AL519 manual illustrates generic-reader functions. The MD808/MD808 Pro documentation describes enhanced alternatives, but is not an exact Modus gearbox compatibility certificate. Ask for written confirmation of the required controller before choosing between those categories.
The FR V2.0 product page describes standalone use and free updates. Check its serial-matched update package, supported computer operating system and USB/card-reader requirements. Standalone operation at the car should not be confused with a phone-only update workflow.
Renault CLIP for the X77 family
Renault’s January 2026 applicability list identifies X77 Modus as CLIP BORNEO2 and marks EURO5 YES. This is a family-level route, not a guarantee for every controller, interface or software entitlement. It should not be confused with the NO entry against older Mégane II applications.
For home CLIP use, confirm legitimate software access, suitable interface and supported computer hardware against the current prerequisites and official diagnostic offer. A copied-software bundle or general adapter claim does not establish the complete arrangement. A specialist visit may cost less than setting up a supported home system for one warning.

Modus automatic scanner questions
Is Quickshift the same coverage enquiry?
No. Identify the actual transmission and ask about it specifically. The handbook separates those systems, and this guide covers the stated 1.6 petrol automatic.
Does “check gearbox” mean a solenoid needs replacing?
The message and the owner report above do not establish that. Obtain the actual controller report and appropriate investigation before treating a suggested part as the answer.
Can a code clear prove the gearbox is repaired?
No. Save the evidence first. A temporarily absent warning or normal operation after a restart does not establish a completed repair or the gearbox’s mechanical condition.
