An ASSYST PLUS workshop code is maintenance information used by the workshop to establish the service requirements for a particular vehicle. It is different from the short A/B message you see when a service is due, and it needs the correct vehicle context to be useful.
Quick answer
Ask the workshop for the service requirements produced from your car’s current maintenance data, then request an itemised quote. A copied workshop code without the car’s identity, mileage and applicable documentation is not a reliable basis for ordering parts.
What does Mercedes documentation establish?
The historical W204/W212 documents describe workshop codes used to generate vehicle-specific service sheets in WIS. Mercedes’ official AP00.20-P-0043EL procedure separately lists reading maintenance data and resetting service data. Reading information and confirming completed maintenance are different operations.
Which document answers which question?
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Dashboard reminder | Which service designation is displayed and when it is due? |
| Workshop maintenance data | Which information should the workshop use to identify requirements? |
| Vehicle-specific service sheet | Which named operations are scheduled for this visit? |
| Itemised quotation | What will those operations cost, and what is provisional? |
| Invoice or completed service record | Which work was actually performed? |
Do not let a code screenshot substitute for the quotation or the completion record. You need to understand the work before authorising it and keep evidence of the work afterwards. If a quotation names a replacement that the workshop has not explained, ask it to connect that replacement to the relevant requirement.
Why can two cars need different work?
The W212 introduction notes that equipment-related requirements can be represented in workshop information even when they are not captured by the short service code. That is one reason the same visible designation should not become one basket of parts for every car.
For your own booking, confirm engine, transmission, equipment, mileage and service history. Do not borrow those details from another owner with the same model badge. If you are comparing prices, compare quotations for your own confirmed operations, including VAT, rather than comparing package names alone.
Can I decode a workshop code online?
An online decoder should identify the vehicles, document versions and maintenance system it supports. Check whether it also accounts for required vehicle information. If those limits are missing, use the result only to frame questions for a workshop. This page provides no unverified character-by-character decoder.
A garage should be able to name the work it proposes. Ask for the requirement in words instead of accepting a statement that the code is “just for the technician”. You do not need to operate workshop software yourself to request an understandable quotation.
Do I need a diagnostic scanner?
Not just to ask a workshop to establish the service scope. If you want your own tool, get written confirmation of maintenance-data access for the precise generation and cluster. Service reset alone is not proof that a tool retrieves the data you need. Our diagnostic hub is a starting point for research, not confirmation of a particular scanner’s ASSYST functions.
What should I do with the information?
Keep the full displayed message and a copy of the itemised estimate. Ask the workshop how earlier documented replacements affect the scheduled work. After maintenance, retain the invoice and completed record. If a reminder appears inconsistent with those records, have it checked rather than confirming work that has not been done.
