UNUSUAL CARS MODEL GUIDE
The Nissan Silvia S15 was the seventh and final Silvia generation, launched in Japan in 1999. It combined a compact rear-wheel-drive coupe body with naturally aspirated SR20DE or turbocharged SR20DET power. The turbo Spec R and its six-speed manual gearbox became the headline model, but badges and modified bodywork make identity checks essential.
Where the S15 fits
The S15 replaced the larger-looking S14 and restored a tighter, more angular shape. Nissan’s own company history dates the model’s introduction to January 1999, while its contemporary Fact Files identify S15 Silvia production with SR20DE and SR20DET engines.

Spec S cars use the naturally aspirated SR20DE. Spec R cars use the turbocharged SR20DET and add stronger performance hardware, including a six-speed manual on relevant versions. Automatic and less familiar equipment combinations exist, so use the build data rather than enthusiast shorthand.
S15 versions explained
| Version | Core distinction |
|---|---|
| Spec S | Naturally aspirated SR20DE; five-speed manual or automatic depending on grade. |
| Spec R | Turbocharged SR20DET with upgraded drivetrain and chassis hardware; six-speed manual on the best-known version. |
| Aero packages | Factory exterior additions available on several grades; bodywork alone does not prove Spec R identity. |
| Varietta | Autech-built folding-hardtop 2+2 using the naturally aspirated engine. |

Nissan Heritage records the 2001 Varietta at 165PS with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. It is an important S15 derivative, but it should not be confused with a turbo Spec R.

SR20DET and turbo system
Start the engine cold and listen for chain, bearing and valvetrain noise. Check oil pressure, smoke, coolant condition, compression and evidence of regular servicing. Turbocharger wear, boost leaks and tired ignition components can be masked by a warm engine or fresh fault-code reset.

Many cars use larger turbochargers, injectors, fuel pumps, intercoolers and programmable management. Require a complete parts list and safe calibration. A front-mounted intercooler cut through structural panels, improvised wiring or an atmospheric blow-off valve used to disguise poor running deserves close investigation.
Six-speed gearbox, differential and suspension
The factory six-speed gives close ratios but is not indestructible. Test synchromesh, bearing noise and engagement under load. Identify any replacement five-speed conversion and establish why it was fitted. Check clutch, propshaft, differential, driveshafts and subframe bushes.

Inspect coilovers, arms and alignment hardware. Extreme camber, seized adjusters and mismatched tyres can make a road car unpleasant and may indicate sustained drift use. Examine steering lock modifications and inner-wheel clearance.
Shell condition and accident repairs
Check sills, jacking points, floor, front chassis rails, strut towers, rear arches, boot floor and rear suspension mounts. Look for rippling, seam-sealer changes, overspray and repaired quarter panels. Drift damage can affect suspension pick-ups even when outer panels look straight.

Confirm the chassis number against Japanese export and UK registration documents. Check speedometer and odometer conversion, warning lights, air conditioning, windows and dashboard wiring. Original lamps, seats, trim and aero parts are valuable because good replacements are increasingly expensive.
Existing S15 archive pages
Unusual Cars already holds two dated, highly modified S15 sales features. They remain useful as specific tuning case studies, but their seller claims and individual specifications do not describe the standard S15 range. This guide provides the canonical model history and buying context.

Frequently asked questions
Was the Nissan Silvia S15 sold new in the UK?
No. British S15s are imports, principally from Japan, so import documentation and market specification need careful verification.
What is the difference between Spec S and Spec R?
Spec S uses the naturally aspirated SR20DE. Spec R uses the turbocharged SR20DET and has upgraded drivetrain and chassis equipment.
Does every Spec R have a six-speed manual?
The best-known Spec R uses the six-speed manual, but automatic versions and later conversions exist. Verify the original model code and current drivetrain.
What is a Silvia Varietta?
It is an Autech-built S15 folding-hardtop 2+2 with the naturally aspirated SR20DE, offered with manual or automatic transmission.
What should be checked before buying an S15?
Verify identity and import history, inspect structural corrosion and accident repairs, and assess the engine, turbo, gearbox, differential, suspension and quality of modifications.
