The Fiat Uno Turbo i.e. squeezed fuel injection and turbocharging into one of Europe’s lightest superminis, creating a tiny car with a formidable reputation.

1. The i.e. meant electronic injection
The suffix distinguished the injected Turbo from carburettor-fed performance cars and highlighted technology that was still noteworthy in 1985.
2. The first engine displaced only 1.3 litres
A turbocharged 1,301 cc unit produced about 105 PS, enough for startling performance in a car weighing well under a tonne.
3. The Mk2 grew to 1.4 litres
The facelifted version gained a larger engine and roughly 118 PS along with smoother styling and a more modern cabin.
4. It used an intercooler
Cooling the compressed intake charge helped Fiat obtain reliable power from its small engine.

5. Digital instruments were available
A futuristic electronic display reinforced the Turbo’s high-tech image, although many cars used conventional analogue dials.
6. Brakes were upgraded substantially
Disc brakes at all four wheels helped distinguish the Turbo’s hardware from ordinary Uno models.

7. It was never officially common in Britain
Limited sales, rust and grey imports made it a rarer UK sight than contemporary Fords, Peugeots and Renaults.
8. Its shape was designed for space
Giugiaro’s tall, square body maximised cabin room, making the dramatic performance seem even more unlikely.
9. Turbo lag defined the experience
Little happened low in the rev range before boost arrived abruptly, creating the memorable surge enthusiasts still celebrate.

10. Original cars are extremely difficult to find
Corrosion, modifications and accident damage removed most survivors; correct trim and injection equipment are now especially valuable.
