Vauxhall Nova Guide: History, Models, GTE, GSi & Buying Advice

Vauxhall Nova model guide

The Vauxhall Nova helped define Britain’s 1980s supermini market, then found a second life as a hot hatch, club-motorsport favourite and one of the country’s most frequently modified small cars.

Quick answer: sold in Britain from 1982 until the Corsa replaced it in 1993, the Nova was offered as hatchback and saloon. The sporting 1.6-litre GTE arrived in 1987 and became the GSi after the 1990 facelift. Buy surviving cars on identity, corrosion, completeness and conversion quality.

Vauxhall Nova history

The Nova was Vauxhall’s first supermini and the British-market version of the first-generation Opel Corsa. Its transverse engine and front-wheel drive packaged useful space into a compact shell. Three- and five-door hatchbacks were joined by two- and four-door saloons, creating a broader range than the hot-hatch reputation suggests.

Vauxhall’s official history dates the UK launch to 1982 and the all-new Corsa replacement to 1993. Early cars are now particularly scarce because inexpensive everyday use, corrosion, accident damage and modification consumed many examples.

Nova models enthusiasts seek

Nova GTE

Launched in 1987 with a fuel-injected 1.6-litre engine producing 100bhp. Vauxhall quoted a kerb weight of 876kg and 117mph.

Nova GSi

The facelifted sporting model introduced when the GTE name changed to GSi in 1990, with cleaner styling and the same essential lightweight formula.

Nova SR

A less powerful but fondly remembered sporting model whose stripes, wheels and trim made performance styling more accessible.

Nova saloons

Two- and four-door notchbacks offered a distinctive alternative to the hatchback and now survive in small numbers, both standard and converted.

GTE, GSi and Opel Corsa names

The Nova name was specific to Britain; European markets knew the car as the Opel Corsa A. Trim names and specifications varied by country. An imported Corsa GT, GSi or other derivative should be researched by its original market rather than automatically equated with a British Nova GTE.

Identification matters: body kits, decals and engines are interchangeable. Confirm the VIN, original model, engine number and registration history before paying a premium for a claimed GTE or GSi.

Common problems and buying checks

  • Corrosion: inspect sills, floors, inner wings, suspension mounts, battery tray, arches, boot floor, rear panel and fuel-filler area.
  • Previous repairs: look for distorted seams, poor welding, filler, overspray and inconsistent panel gaps.
  • Engine and cooling: start from cold, check fluids, leaks, fan operation and timing-belt evidence.
  • Transmission: test clutch, synchromesh, driveshafts and wheel bearings.
  • Suspension and brakes: examine bushes, mounts, dampers, brake pipes and tyre condition.
  • Trim: seats, dashboards, exterior mouldings and model-specific details can be difficult to replace.
  • Modifications: require component specifications, invoices, build photographs and proof that changes are insured and documented.

Standard cars and modified Novas

A sound standard 1.0 or 1.2 can be more difficult to find than a modified example and provides an important reference for how a Nova should feel. Engine-swapped and turbocharged cars can be exciting, but the shell, brakes, cooling and transmission must be engineered as a system. Rear- and four-wheel-drive builds require far more structural work than a conventional front-drive engine conversion.
