UNUSUAL CARS MODEL GUIDE
The W204 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG put AMG’s naturally aspirated 6.2-litre M156 V8 into the compact C-Class. Sold as a saloon, estate and later a coupé, it combined rear-wheel drive, a dramatic soundtrack and relatively restrained styling with performance that still defines the model for many enthusiasts.
Quick answer: The standard C63 produced 336 kW (457 PS) and 600 Nm, while later Performance Package, Black Series and Edition 507 versions added power and chassis changes. Buyers should prioritise engine history, cylinder-head bolt specification on earlier cars, cam and lifter condition, cooling, transmission servicing, differential noise, suspension wear and accident repair quality.
How the W204 C63 changed AMG
Earlier AMG C-Class models adapted engines shared with other Mercedes-Benz ranges. The W204 C63 arrived in 2007 with the M156, the first engine designed wholly by AMG. Its wider front track, unique front bodywork, revised steering and heavily reworked suspension made it more than a large engine fitted to a normal C-Class.

M156 V8, transmission and chassis
Although commonly called a 6.3, the M156 displaces 6,208 cc. In standard European specification it developed 336 kW (457 PS) and 600 Nm. Early cars used the AMG Speedshift 7G-Tronic automatic; later versions gained updated control strategies, while the facelift adopted a wet-clutch MCT arrangement in place of a conventional torque converter. Market and model-year detail should always be checked against the vehicle data card.

Saloon, estate and coupé versions
The W204 saloon and S204 estate arrived first. The C204 coupé followed the 2011 facelift, which also brought revised styling, cabin electronics and mechanical changes. The estate offers rare practicality for a naturally aspirated AMG, while the coupé created the basis for the widest range of late special editions.

Performance Package, Black Series and Edition 507
Performance Package Plus cars borrowed internal engine components from the SLS AMG and raised output. The C63 AMG Coupé Black Series went much further with 380 kW (517 PS), wider bodywork, adjustable suspension and an optional track package. The Edition 507 used 372 kW (507 PS) and was offered across all three body styles, making documentary verification important.

Mercedes C63 AMG W204 buying guide
Demand a complete service record and confirm whether early cylinder-head bolts have been inspected or updated. Listen for valvetrain noise, check for oil and coolant leaks, and verify stable temperatures. The transmission should engage promptly and shift consistently. Inspect the limited-slip differential where fitted, engine and gearbox mounts, front suspension links, rear subframe area, brakes and tyres. Uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint and poor wheel alignment may indicate hard use or accident repair.

Why it matters
The W204 C63 was the final compact AMG built around a large naturally aspirated V8. Its combination of everyday usability, three body styles and multiple factory performance derivatives gives it unusually broad enthusiast appeal.
